During an interview with Sportsnet, the Hockey Hall of Famer revealed he’s got some serious health issues.
“Unfortunately, I have been battling some health issues,” Iginla told the outlet.
“Some neurological issues. I’m not entirely sure what it is; it may be from metal toxins from reaction to the cobalt hip.”
The 49-year-old underwent hip replacement surgery in the fall of 2017. He suffered effects in the aftermath of the procedure that hampered his energy, speech and weight.
Doctors are concerned that cobalt-chromium components from the artificial hip implants can get into the bloodstream and has also had high mercury levels.
Iginla has been going to doctors for over a year trying to get to the root of the problem and cure the issues. Throughout this situation, Iginla has remained optimistic that a 100 percent recovery is in the cards.
“I need more time to figure it all out, but I’m still hopeful that I will recover fully,” Iginla said.
“Things are slowly getting under control, thanks be to God.”
