Sony has filed a patent for a new technology that could change the quality of game streaming on consoles, Wccftech reports, citing Patentlyze.
According to the document, the technology involves using artificial intelligence models to reduce the amount of data transmitted during gameplay. The idea is to create “holes” in the image streamed to the player, with AI reconstructing the missing sections after the data has been transmitted over the network. This approach is intended to reduce the load on the internet connection and minimize the risk of degraded image quality or interrupted gaming sessions.
The quality of game streaming has improved significantly over the past six years, but a stable, high-speed internet connection remains essential for low latency, high resolution, and consistent performance. With a weak or unstable connection, players may experience reduced image quality or disconnections from the service.
The patented technology aims to address this problem by optimizing the amount of data transmitted. The patent describes a process that involves receiving an image, removing some of its elements to create “holes,” and inserting special “anchors” that represent details of the removed sections. A machine learning model then reconstructs these areas to produce a complete image.

A video game frame divided into a grid, with numbers indicating which sections of each frame can be removed.

This system could represent an important step forward for cloud gaming, as transmitting less data could make the experience more responsive and reduce delays during gameplay. At the same time, if the reconstruction network fails to work correctly, AI could generate details that were not present in the original game image. This could affect the accuracy and authenticity of the scene, making it essential for developers to ensure that the algorithms operate as reliably as possible.
