In the pantheon of science fiction franchises, Stargate stands out. While it hasn’t been as massively popular as Star Warsor Star Trek, it built a long-running empire of television shows off the back of the 1994 film. Whether fans got into Stargatevia the movie or Stargate SG-1, they were hooked. So when Prime Video announced that it was launching a new Stargateseries, fans were stoked…and then their hopes were dashed when that reboot failed to take off. Immediately, a “#SaveStargate” campaign launched on social media, aiming to persuade Prime Video to pursue the reboot. Banners were flown over Amazon. A Discord server was launched. Digital billboards flared to life in Times Square, thanks to fan donations.
Those pleas seemed to have worked, as Prime Video is now redeveloping its Stargateseries with WandaVision showrunner Jac Schaffer. But what stands out about this campaign, at least to me, is that there’s genuine passion behind it. Unlike other online petitions or movements fueled solely by spite, these fans just want to see more Stargate. Saturday at LA Comic Con was further proof, as a nearly packed room gathered to hear how the movement took off.
Most of the panelists, including Jenny Stiven – the editor of the Stargateroleplaying game – started talking about how they got into Stargate. Some discovered it during the early days of COVID-19. Others, like Stiven, were fans from the moment the original movie launched. Stiven also discussed how she was surprised by the outpouring of support, including gatherings of fans at San Diego Comic-Con and DragonCon. “It’s like all of these fans were waiting to come together and do something for Stargate,” she said.
These fans also fly in the face of Prime Video’s original decision to put the show on the back burner: that there wasn’t a big enough audience. Obviously, gatherings at two of the biggest cons in North America prove that false, and the fan Discord has over 3200 members. The panelists stressed that #SaveStargate wasn’t just about bringing back the series, but also forming community – a community that was dubbed the Chevron Alliance. “Regardless of whether it comes back or not, a large part of why we love Stargateis the community it created for us,” former Stargateproducer Kelly Varner said, noting that Stargatehad gotten her – and others – through tough times. Panelist Alisa Voll also noted that writing about Stargate SG-1launched her journalism career, and even got her invited to the set.
Throughout the panel, video messages played from actors associated with the Stargatefranchise, particularly SG-1alums Michael Shanks and Christopher Judge. All of them expressed their joy that fans were going out of their way to support Stargate, and gave their heartfelt thanks. Then it was time for the audience to share their stories about how they got into Stargate, which led to a wide range of answers. Some grew up in the ’90s, considered to be the “Golden Age” of sci-fi shows, and discovered it then. Others got their hands on bootlegged tapes. One person even mentioned that her work took her to Egypt, which led her to form a close bond with Stargate.
Stargatehas thrived for years, and this gathering of fans proves that it will continue to thrive now that an actual community has formed. If Prime Video’s reboot takes off, it no doubt will bring in another legion of fans ready to step through the Stargate.
