PS6 reveal month set, but there’s not enough time to save for that $1,000 price tag

It looks like the reveal of the PlayStation 6 may soon be upon us, but if you’re hoping to snag one at launch, you’ll have to have started saving yesterday.

After years of rumours, it looks like the PS6 may finally be ready for a proper reveal very soon.

Although we still don’t know too much about what’ll be going on inside the console, more information about when the reveal will take place has come to light.

Insider Millie A has shared some intel regarding when we might get a first reveal of the upcoming console.

Posting on X (formerly Twitter), the insider <a href="https://x.com/millieamand/status/2115860867023503789" rel="nofollow noopener" target=”_blank”>wrote last week: “As of today, the current roadmap targets an announcement of PlayStation 6 in early March 2027.”

This matches what Sony has done in the past, with console reveals typically taking place in the spring or summer, and then released towards the end of the year.

The PlayStation 3, for example, was officially revealed in May 2006 and released in Japan later that September. The PS4 was revealed in February 2013 and released in November. The PS5, on the other hand, got a much later announcement, being revealed in June 2020 and released in November that year.

The PlayStation 6 could be the most expensive video game console ever

As for the PlayStation 6, there’s one thing to bear in mind that sets this launch apart from previous consoles, and it’s to do with cost.

The ongoing global RAM supply shortage has caused prices of consumer tech to skyrocket. It’s rumoured that the PS6 could cost as much as $1,000-$1,200 at launch, with most of that price going towards the RAM, graphics card, and storage inside the console. This would make it one of the most expensive video game consoles ever.

These shortages have come about as a result of AI companies buying up all the stock to fuel their data centres, leaving very little supply for consumers or companies to sell consumer products. This has caused prices to rise exponentially, with the cost of some products going up by as much as 400%.

This was similar to the global chip shortage of 2020, where supply chains of various technologies were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Although the PlayStation 5 didn’t see a massive price hike at the time, it did mean that supply was massively limited, and some people had to wait for months to be able to secure a purchase for the console.

This shortage was eventually resolved around 2023, but its effects are still felt today. The current RAM shortages are not expected to be resolved as quickly, either, with some experts believing high prices and low supply of certain computer hardware will last until 2030 at the earliest.

The reality of this means that upcoming hardware like the PlayStation 6 or Xbox Helix are going to cost much more than what tech companies were originally targeting. We’ve already seen this with the Steam Machine, which was delayed throughout the first half of 2026 due to the unpredictable market. It was eventually released with a starting price of $1,049, with analysts saying that under the old prices, Valve would have been able to sell the hardware at around $750.
