You open a chest on Crossbones Isle and get the whole Item Shop instead of a shotgun. That’s the new Pirate Shop in Fortnite. It’s a rare chest reward in the Treasure Hunters mini-season, which went live on November 1. Once activated, everything sold for V-Bucks in the Item Shop can be claimed for free for 14 days. And if your squadmate finds it, you get it too.
Players went chasing it right away. Leaker HYPEX reported a peak of nearly five million concurrent players on day one, and Epic had to put login queues in place for the first time in a long while.
How the Pirate Shop token works in Treasure Hunters
It’s a gamble every time you open a chest. According to HYPEX, as Battle Royale chests can roll a Treasure Hunt prize, and the Pirate Shop is in that prize pool every week. Treasures are shared across the party. If you play Squads and one of your teammates finds the Pirate Shop Access Treasure, you should also receive it
One win gets you two separate free shop periods. Winning the Pirate Shop gives you two activations, one for 2026 and one for 2027. The 14-day timer doesn’t start until you press activate. Yahoo Tech reports that the redemption windows are currently listed as Nov 1 – Dec 16 and Jan 1, Dec 16, 2027. So you can sit on the token and wait for a shop rotation you actually like.
The item description in the game is simple. “Activate the Pirate Shop to plunder the Fortnite Item Shop for 14 days from time of activation. While the Pirate Shop is activated, items sold for V-Bucks in the Fortnite Item Shop will be available to claim for free.”
Day-one players were mostly worried about the limits, and plenty were just stuck in the login queue:
Real-money offers, gifts and Battle Pass levels aren’t included
It isn’t completely unlimited. Yahoo Tech lists the exclusions as real-money offers (rather than things that cost V-Bucks), Gifts, Battle Pass levels, or Sidekicks you already own. Dexerto adds that players can also only claim one free Sidekick they don’t already own. You also can’t use it to gift items to friends.
Anything you do claim is yours to keep. A player called snowslept found the free shop token on the first day of the season, and Dexerto says he later confirmed that items claimed through the Pirate Shop are permanent and that Jam Tracks are included.
Our view: as a way to get people playing, this is a clever trick. A tiny number of players get a huge prize, and millions of others open chests while dreaming about it. We’d still like Epic to publish the drop odds. A prize this big shouldn’t come with secret odds, especially in a game this many kids play.
Nearly 5 million players and a 12-minute login queue
The player numbers jumped on launch day. In a post on X, HYPEX said Fortnite peaked at nearly 5 million live players at once, with 2,100,000+ on Battle Royale and 615,000+ on UGC / Creative Maps. He counted another two million or so sitting in lobbies. Push Square reported the peak as more than five million. HYPEX’s own post says “nearly,” so treat the five-million figure as approximate.
A second tracker gives a slightly lower total. Techtroduce reports that FNTerminal, which uses Epic’s ecosystem API, recorded approximately 2.16 million concurrent players in Battle Royale at 19:20 UTC on November 1. FNTerminal had the total connected population exceeding 4.2 million during the day.
All those players meant queues. TheGamer says that, going by Fortnite bot data, the queue peaked at 12 minutes long, although some Twitter users claimed to be waiting even longer than that.
It’s a big day, but it’s not a record. Fortnite.gg lists the all-time peak as 14,343,880, set on November 30, 2024. The OG season launch in November 2023 also beat it, peaking at 5.8 million concurrent players, the highest for the game in many, many years
Treasure Hunters runs to December 5, the same month as GTA 6
Epic told Shacknews in a press release that Treasure Hunters will be a mini season, only running from November 1 to December 5. The map is Crossbones Isle. It’s smaller than usual, so matches are down from 100 players to 80. The One Piece locations include Arlong Park and Windmill Village.
Shop timing matters if you’re holding a token. Fortnite Tracker’s schedule has Luffy, Nami and Usopp at launch, then A$AP Rocky on November 5 at 7 PM ET. Zoro, Sanji and the Chopper Sidekick follow on November 7, Lil Uzi Vert on November 12, and Buggy on November 13. Kasane Teto and Cap’n Hatsune Miku arrive on November 14.
The release date makes sense. GameSpot points out that Fortnite is facing down the launch of GTA VI in late November. Game Rant puts it more bluntly: a free Item Shop looks like Fortnite’s answer to Rockstar’s game. Giving away its own shop is an expensive way to keep players around, but day one shows it working.
