A Battlestar Galactica Star Played ’70s Icon Farrah Fawcett In A Made-For

Whether you love it or hate it, “Charlie’s Angels” is one of the TV shows that most defined the 1970s. Decades later, the show remained famous enough to prompt a TV movie, “Behind the Camera: The Unauthorized Story of ‘Charlie’s Angels,'” which aired on NBC in 2004. The role of blonde bombshell Farrah Fawcett went to Tricia Helfer, a model and actress best known for playing seductive Cylon Number Six in “Battlestar Galactica.”

“Behind the Camera” is based on “Charlie’s Angels Casebook” by Jack Condon and David Hofstede. Condon, a fan of the series since childhood, has collected more than 8,000 items of memorabilia; the largest “Charlie’s Angels” collection in the world. He also took part in the production of “Behind the Camera,” including the casting of Helfer and her co-stars. Helfer acted alongside Christina Chambers, who played Jaclyn Smith, and Lauren Stamile, who played Kate Jackson. The cast also includes Ben Browder as Lee Majors (Fawcett’s former husband), Dan Castellaneta as Aaron Spelling, and Dan Lauria as TV executive Fred Silverman.

Tricia Helfer wasn’t familiar with Charlie’s Angels before auditioning for the role

Tricia Helfer didn’t grow up dreaming of being an actress, but a chance encounter led her to a career in Hollywood. She was raised on a farm in rural Canada without a TV in the house. As she told Craig Kilborn on his talk show, a Ford Models scout discovered her in a local movie theater, launching her modeling career. Helfer never watched “Charlie’s Angels” — or any television at all — when she was younger, so she went out and bought the DVDs when she booked her first audition for the TV movie.

Reviews for “Behind the Camera: The Unauthorized Story of ‘Charlie’s Angels,'” weren’t great, but some viewers noted its campy appeal. It “doubtless mangles TV history but manages to have quite a bit of fun doing it,” reads a review in Variety. Indeed, the movie has a sort of over-the-top, bad-but-good quality to it, much like the TV show itself.

Since her stint as the big-haired, bright-smiled Farrah Fawcett, Helfer has gone on to play Lucifer’s cheeky mother on “Lucifer,” and more recently appeared in USA’s park ranger crime drama “Anna Pigeon.” At the 2026 Emmys, Jaclyn Smith, Kate Jackson, and Cheryl Ladd (who replaced Fawcett after her departure) reunited to celebrate the 50th anniversary of “Charlie’s Angels.” Fawcett passed away in 2009.
