System Of A Down drummer John Dolmayan has <a href="https://www.desmoinesregister.com/press-release/story/145629/heavy-metal-legend-john-dolmayan-of-system-of-a-down-acquires-825000-action-1-first-appearance-of-superman/” rel=”nofollow noopener” target=”_blank”>purchased a copy of Action Comics #1, the 1938 comic book featuring the first appearance of Superman, for $825,000.
The purchase took place earlier this month at New York Comic Con, with the transaction brokered by Metropolis Collectibles. The comic was sold in its original, unrestored condition without having been professionally graded.
Dolmayan, an avid comic book collector and retailer, previously purchased a restored copy of the same issue graded 8.5 in February. At the time, he said he had dreamed of owning the comic for years.
The drummer also operates Torpedo Comics, which transitioned to an online-only business earlier this year following the closure of its Las Vegas storefront in May.
According to the report, Metropolis Collectibles sold two copies of Action Comics #1during New York Comic Con for a combined total exceeding $2 million. The second copy, a partially restored example graded 9.0, sold for $1.3 million.
Earlier this year, another 9.0-graded copy reportedly sold for $15 million, setting a new record for the most expensive comic book ever sold.
