VRChat has decided not to introduce labels identifying AI-generated content on its platform, despite a survey showing that 95 per cent of respondents want some form of disclosure about the use of artificial intelligence. The company outlined its position in a support post discussing community feedback and the challenges of introducing AI-related labelling across its virtual reality social platform.

VRChat allows users to create, share and explore virtual worlds where they can interact with others. Its creative environment supports a wide range of activities, including social gatherings, virtual events and user-generated experiences. However, as AI tools become increasingly common in digital content creation, questions about transparency and authorship have become more prominent among its community.

The survey results indicate strong interest in giving users a clearer understanding of how content is produced. Nevertheless, VRChat said it would not immediately introduce a system to identify AI-generated material or allow users to filter such content from search results. The decision reflects concerns about how labels could be used, whether creators would provide accurate information and how the system might affect interactions within the community.

VRChat considers alternative ways to identify content creators

Although the company has ruled out introducing dedicated AI-generated content labels for now, it has not completely dismissed the possibility of providing more information about how virtual worlds and other creations are made. VRChat said it would continue considering a Human-authored label and a separate Tools used field that could allow creators to explain their production methods.

These options would offer a different approach to content transparency. Rather than directly identifying material as AI-generated, the proposed fields could let creators describe the extent of human involvement and disclose which tools they used during development. However, the company has not confirmed whether either feature will become part of the platform.

This distinction matters because digital creations can involve different levels of human and automated input. Some creators may use AI tools to generate initial concepts, produce textures or assist with other elements of their projects, while others may rely entirely on traditional creative processes. A single label might not accurately represent these different approaches.

VRChat’s position suggests that the company is still examining how to provide meaningful information without creating additional problems for creators. The proposed Human-authored and Tools used fields could eventually offer more flexibility, although their effectiveness would depend on how the information is supplied and displayed.

For now, users will not have a dedicated AI label to identify content created with generative artificial intelligence. They also won’t be able to use a specific search filter to exclude AI-generated creations when exploring the platform’s virtual worlds and other community content.

VRChat explained that introducing AI-related labels could create difficulties because the system would depend heavily on creators accurately describing their work. The company acknowledged that some users might voluntarily disclose their use of AI tools, while others could misrepresent how they produced their creations.

“While we think some creators would honestly label their content, we think others would try to pass off generative or assisted work as completely authored by hand,” the game’s creators said.

This concern highlights one of the main challenges of introducing AI disclosure requirements on platforms that depend on user-generated content. Without a reliable way to verify the information, labels could become inconsistent or misleading. Creators who use AI assistance might choose not to disclose it, while others could face questions about their work even when they have not used generative tools.

The company also raised concerns about users investigating other creators’ work to determine whether AI was involved. It suggested that such behaviour could encourage unnecessary disputes and accusations within the community.

“Likewise, we could see this creating ‘sleuthing’ behaviour, where folks would attempt to sniff out ‘AI’ content or might harass other creators, even if they are genuinely not using any AI tools in their workflow.”

The warning reflects concerns that AI labels could become more than simple information markers. They might also influence how users judge creators and their work, potentially creating divisions between people with different views about artificial intelligence.

Rather than introducing a feature that could satisfy one group while upsetting another, VRChat said it would focus on changes that had broader agreement across its community. The company identified several areas where users appeared to share common interests, including more accurate thumbnails, improved discovery tools and making quality a core metric when presenting content.

These priorities suggest that VRChat wants to improve how users find and experience virtual worlds without making AI usage the central measure of a creation’s value. Better thumbnails could help users understand what to expect before entering a virtual environment, while improved discovery features could make it easier to find relevant experiences and creators.

VRChat faces wider questions about creativity and community safety

The discussion surrounding AI labels comes as VRChat continues to demonstrate the different ways virtual reality platforms can support creative expression and social interaction. Its user-generated environment has attracted people interested in filmmaking, digital storytelling and building communities around shared experiences.

The platform has also been used to create supportive spaces for transgender people, offering opportunities for social interaction and community participation in virtual environments. These examples show how user-created worlds can offer experiences beyond traditional gaming and entertainment.

However, the platform has also faced criticism over toxic and predatory behaviour. As with other online social spaces, its open environment creates challenges around moderation, user safety, and ensuring people can interact without harassment or exploitation.

The debate over AI-generated content adds another issue to these existing challenges. As generative AI becomes more accessible, platforms such as VRChat must balance creative freedom with transparency and user expectations. Some community members may want clear disclosures about AI involvement, while others may be more concerned about whether a creation is enjoyable, original or technically well made.

The survey results show that AI transparency is an important concern among respondents, but VRChat’s decision indicates that introducing labels is not necessarily a straightforward solution. The company appears to favour improvements that address shared community priorities rather than adopting a labelling system that could create new disputes.

For creators, the current position means there is no immediate requirement to identify AI-assisted or AI-generated work through dedicated platform tags. For users, it means that identifying such content will continue to depend on information provided by individual creators and other available indicators.

VRChat has left the door open to considering alternative disclosure options, but it has not announced a timeline or confirmed that the proposed fields will be introduced. Its approach may evolve as AI technology develops and community expectations change.
