The Borowitz Report Climbs the Charts after Adding Cartoons

After Andy Borowitz announced he was adding cartoons to his The Borowitz Report the site moved up the charts. Said Andy on Facebook:
“One day after I announced that TBR would be publishing cartoons, this happened. Note to the mainstream media outlets that are cutting cartoons: maybe reconsider?”
I would like to think readers of The Daily Cartoonist helped.
This week’s cartoon is by another comedian – cartoonistJason Chatfield.
“Pastis has been an enthusiastic consumer of the brewery”

For collectors of Stephan Pastis‘ Pearls Before Swine ephemera the time is getting close for PBS beer bottle labels. Sarah Doyle for The Press Democrat reports:
“Russian River Brewing Company will release a limited-edition Pliny the Elder Double IPA featuring artwork by Stephan Pastis, creator of the comic strip ‘Pearls Before Swine.’
“The special-edition bottles will be available locally beginning the week of Nov. 2 and more broadly starting Nov. 12 wherever Pliny the Elder is sold, including Whole Foods, Oliver’s Markets and Bottle Barn.
“’Pastis has been an enthusiastic supporter and consumer of the brewery for years, so this collaboration is a natural fit.’“
“Pastis will appear at the brewery’s Windsor pub from 5-6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 12, to sign bottles and copies of his new book, ‘Pearls Jubilee.’”
Those of us that can’t make it on Nov. 12 will have to wait another month to get the book.

Looks like Pastis has had a few Pliny the Elders while the photographer set the scene for the book cover.
Rip Kirby, Detective

Chris Coplin at AIPT interviews Christopher Sebela the writer of the new Rip Kirby comic book from Mad Cave.
“When my editor, Sarah Brunstad, and I started talking about the book, she sent me the complete run from 1946 to 1999. I read something like 75% of them, sometimes skipping a storyline or three when they weren’t hooking me. So, once I started sketching out ideas, I felt deeply familiar with what had come before. Obviously a Rip Kirby written in 2026 is not going to perfectly mesh with ones written 80 years beforehand, but I wanted to match as much of the original Rip Kirby as I could, while digging a little deeper into what makes Rip the hero he is and how a hero like that faces a world that’s changing dramatically around him.”
“Well, writing a mystery is like woodworking; you might have a totally different approach from tradition, but you’re still going to pull a few of the same tools out of the toolbox to make it happen. Luckily, I’ve read and watched a lot of mystery stuff in my life, so I feel like I spent a long time preparing to write a few of my own. But one of the fun parts of working on Rip Kirby is getting to change up the approach with each different storyline we tackle. We go from a traditional whodunit to a more Columbo-esque approach of the mystery being in how the crook will get snapped up by Rip right into more straight ahead adventure stories.”
BAA returns

I guess the British Animation Awards went into hibernation after the 2024 ceremonies. Jamie Lang at Cartoon Brew tells us it will Return In 2028 Under New Leadership.
“The British Animation Awards will return to London in 2028 after a hiatus, with animation industry veterans Tracy Shaw and Anna Lord taking the organization’s leadership.
“Founded in 1996, the biennial awards recognize British animation across features, television, shorts, and other formats. The relaunch will introduce a refreshed category structure, including new categories allowing work from other countries to compete.”
One Panel Continuity

KAL deconstructs his recent cartoon‘s layout for The Economist in six steps. With the usual Disgustus bonus.

Transmogrified

Michael Moreci for GoComics explains one of Calvin’s always fascinating inventions.
“The transmogrifier.
“Perhaps Calvin’s strangest creation, Bill Watterson introduced the transmogrifier on March 23, 1987. It was, at that time, simply an upside-down box that had the power to turn anyone who entered into one of four things: an eel, a baboon, a bug, or a dinosaur. Don’t like those options? Not to worry—Calvin left room on the side of the box for other potential transformations.”
