Singer Shilpa Rao’s performance was stopped midway at the 10th anniversary edition of the Bollywood Music Project (BMP) held at the Jio World Gardens in Mumbai on October 24.
Shilpa was set to perform between 7.45 pm and 8.15 pm as per the original schedule, but she reportedly took the stage around 8.30 pm as the event ran behind schedule.
She began her set with Tose Naina Lage from Anwar, but her microphone stopped working towards the end of the song. Her attempt to address the audience before leaving the stage was also interrupted.
Videos shared by attendees on social media showed the singer’s performance being disrupted. The situation reportedly escalated after Shilpa performed Chuttamalle from Devara, when her microphone was switched off again, and the main stage lights went out. This left many viewers confused and disappointed, and several members of the audience called out the management for disrespecting the singer.

At the same time, Kutle Khan and his band, The Kutle Khan Project, began performing on a second stage. Shilpa was still on stage when the next act started, leaving several audience members angrier.

As seen in many videos circulating on X, Shilpa addressed the cheering crowd, saying, “I don’t need a mic. You guys are my voice!” The audience continued to support her as she performed songs including Tere Hawaale, Khuda Jaane, Woh Ajnabee and Chuttamalle. Singer Rish also joined her on stage for Barbaad from Saiyaara.
When Shilpa attempted to thank the audience for their patience, her speech was reportedly cut short as the next act began. Attendees began chanting her name and demanding that she be allowed to complete her performance. Her microphone was briefly switched back on, allowing her to address the crowd while Kutle Khan continued performing on the adjacent stage.
Shilpa then addressed Kutle Khan directly, saying, “Kutle ji, main ek line bol ke nikal jaungi, theek hai? Aap bahut accha gaa rahe ho. Aap bahut sahi gaa rahe ho.”
Explaining why she wanted to speak before leaving, the singer added, “I just wanted to say bye. I can’t leave without saying bye. Woh nahin gaane de rahe.” The audience reportedly booed as the incident unfolded.
Following the performance, Shilpa took to Instagram to thank her fans for standing by her during the Mumbai show. Reflecting on the incident, she wrote, “Mumbai, a little piece of my heart broke tonight. It hurts deeply to have something so beautiful taken away from us like this. But even when the music stopped, you did not. The way you kept calling my name, the love in your voices. I could feel it all. Our story tonight was left unfinished. I promise, I will come back I love you, Mumbai. Forever and ever,” she added.
Mumbai I love you ❤️ https://t.co/Y3AZVih4Wh
