SteamOS Beta Introduces Seasonal Achievements and Better Steam Machine Displays

SteamOS beta introduces redesigned achievement sets, seasonal rewards, faster launch times, and improved customization options across Valve’s growing gaming ecosystem.

Steam keeps expanding with regular software updates and community-driven hardware breakthroughs. The newest Steam client beta has updated achievement sets, seasonal achievements, and faster startup times. New advancements to Steam Machine display attachments make installation easier and offer more customization.

Together, these enhancements show Valve’s continued work to make its gaming ecosystem more flexible and user-friendly.

Steam Client Beta Improves Launch Times and Achievements

Valve has released several Steam client upgrades lately, including startup performance enhancements and an improved Epic Games Store launcher for Windows and Linux. Epic began advertising its launcher as faster than Steam. Valve responded by upgrading Steam to launch even faster.

The biggest change in the new beta, however, is a full reworking of Steam’s achievement system. The new achievement system separates base-game achievements from those added through downloadable content (DLC).

Previously, new DLC achievements could lower the percentage of a game completed, even if a player had earned all achievements in the original version. The new method means the original game will maintain its 100% completion rate, but each DLC release will have its own accomplishment list. This improvement makes it easier to measure progress, especially in games with many expansions and more content.

Seasonal Achievements Make Limited-Time Events More Flexible

Valve is also rolling out seasonal achievements, which could help live-service games like Hunt: Showdown 1896, which frequently runs limited-time events.

Players can earn prizes for completing event-specific objectives when developers create event-specific achievement sets for seasonal activities. Importantly, Valve has also addressed a possible flaw in this system: Players who miss an event won’t permanently add that event’s achievement set to their achievement library or add it to their overall completion %.

This is great for people who hop between games, like Battlefield 6, ARC Raiders, and The Finals. Players aren’t pressured to participate in every event and can focus on the activities that interest them.

The achievement pages have also undergone a visual overhaul, making them look better. These changes are built into the Steam client, so they benefit compatible devices that don’t run SteamOS, such as the Steam Deck and Windows handhelds. The features are now accessible on the Steam client beta, but only for select games.

JSAUX Makes Steam Machine Displays Easier to Customize

Alongside software improvements, the Steam Machine accessory market is developing rapidly. You can choose from Valve-inspired 3D-printable designs, JSAUX’s e-ink and dot-matrix displays, and Peak Pal’s color e-ink-style display, which was priced at $78 on its Kickstarter campaign.

JSAUX’s screens are customizable, but require Decky Loader and other apps that must be downloaded from externalction is displaying information and visuals is unnecessarily complicated

To overcome these limits, the company is trying to make its display program openpproved, it might be easy to install, which might remove the requirement for Decky Loader

For community developers, open-econd reader, and expand customization options. This would let consumers customize their displays to their preferences

Steam Machine Displays Could Become Secondary Monitors

Eventually, small front-mounted screens could be more useful than decoration or system info. With the right connectivity and software, you could use a small external HDMI screen as a secondary monitor for Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, and other background apps.

The idea brings to mind previous console accessories with flip-up screens, letting gamers use their systems without plugging into a TV. A small display on a Steam Machine wouldn’t replace a regular monitor, but it may be a nice way to get media controls and other details while you’re playing.

Third-party developers are already playing with more Steam Deck and Steam Machine applications, including streaming and recording utilities. More open-

Silent Hill Townfall and Steam Deck Performance

Silent Hill Townfall is another example of how software optimization affects the Steam Deck experience. The survival-horror title allegedly runs at roughly 30 fps on the Steam Deck on low settings, and its stealth focus makes it more playable on the go.

Performance on Steam Machine has also improved greatly with a post-launch patch, with less stuttering when entering new sections. The game focuses on Simon, who wakes up on the Scottish island of Santa Emilia with little idea what’s going on. Exploration, environmental riddles, and scary pursuing enemies slowly build up its disturbing atmosphere.

Meanwhile, Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse has apparently struggled to offer the desired 60fps handheld experience, so it’s worth keeping an eye out for future optimization patches. Other horror releases include Halloween 5 DLC, which features the Tower Farm map, and the Camp Blood upgrade for No More Room in Hell 2.

Overall, the recent Steam updates show how software updates, open-re ecosystem. Valve’s platform is evolving into more than just a gaming device, with better accomplishment tracking and even more customizable displays
