Microsoft reportedly projects an MSRP between $1,200 and $1,800 for its next-generation Xbox console, which sits under the Project Helix umbrella. The console is expected to launch by the 2028 holiday season, so it’s still a couple of years away.
In a lengthy profile of Xbox CEO Asha Sharma, Fortune wrote that “the price of the Helix console has internally been projected to cost consumers between $1,200 and $1,800, unless Microsoft decides to subsidize the cost.” The brand has done this before, including with the Xbox X|S, so it’s not out of the question; some console makers deliberately sell their hardware at a loss to later profit from software.
Microsoft previously confirmed that the Project Helix console would play Xbox console and PC games. It’s working with AMD to develop a custom AMD system-on-chip, and engineers are designing it around the next generation of DirectX and AMD’s FSR graphics. Microsoft plans to start shipping alpha hardware to developers in 2027, which differs from the reported consumer launch target.
Fortune‘s story also says Xbox plans to release a next-generation handheld for the 2027 holiday season. It does not, however, mention or clarify whether it’d be Microsoft or a hardware partner that would manufacture that device.
Back in June, Sharma said the console market needs more affordable hardware to survive. At the time, she said consoles could someday cost consumers “thousands of dollars,” and that that price point wouldn’t be realistic for most people.
