Intel Core Ultra 9 4995HX Leak Reveals 28-Core Nova Lake CPU

Intel’s rumored 28-core Nova Lake processor signals a major push toward desktop-class performance in premium gaming laptops.

The push to deliver desktop-class performance in portable systems is entering another phase, with Intel’s upcoming Nova Lake-HX lineup reportedly preparing a flagship processor featuring an unprecedented 28 CPU cores. According to leaks the Intel Core Ultra 9 4995HX will combine a high core count with a deliberately limited integrated GPU, targeting premium gaming laptops and mobile workstations

This rumored configuration suggests Intel is prioritizing multi-threaded processing and dedicated graphics connectivity over integrated graphics performance. For enthusiasts considering laptops with NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080 or RTX 5090 Laptop GPUs, that design philosophy could matter. However, the real test will be whether the processor can sustain performance within a portable chassis’s thermal and power limits.

    Intel Nova Lake-HX introduces a 28-core configuration

The leaked Core Ultra 9 4995HX reportedly features eight Performance cores, 16 Efficient cores, and four Low-Power Efficient cores. This 8+16+4 configuration delivers 28 CPU cores, exceeding the 24-core configuration found in Intel’s current flagship Arrow Lake-HX processors.

The P-cores handle high-demand game threads and latency-sensitive programs, while the 16 E-cores add throughput for rendering, video encoding, software compilation, and multitasking. Another efficiency-oriented level is the four LP-E cores for acceptable background jobs.

This reflects changing expectations around expensive gaming computers. More and more, people use these PCs as development systems, streaming platforms, and portable workstations rather than dedicated gaming devices. More E-cores could help keep things snappy while taxing programs are running alongside games.

However, a higher core count doesn’t immediately translate to better gaming performance. Many titles rely heavily on single-thread performance, cache behavior, and memory latency. To justify its flagship positioning, Intel needs major architectural changes alongside the increased processor re

Two Xe Cores Reflect a Discrete Graphics First Strategy

Another notable detail concerns the integrated graphics. The Core Ultra 9 4995HX reportedly includes just two Xe3 graphics cores, rather than a substantially larger integrated GPU. Although the leaked description references Xe4 Druid, current reports identify the rumored Nova Lake-HX graphics configuration as Xe3-based, so the final architecture remains an important detail to verify.

The limited iGPU makes sense for a processor intended primarily for enthusiast laptops. Manufacturers pairing this chip with flagship discrete graphics already dedicate considerable space, cooling capacity, and electrical power to a separate GPU. A larger integrated graphics configuration would offer less value during demanding gaming sessions.

However, a smaller iGPU does not automatically improve CPU performance or guarantee lower power consumption. Those benefits depend on the processor’s complete design, silicon allocation, and power-management behavior.

PCIe 5.0 Could Strengthen Discrete GPU Connectivity

The possibility of a full PCIe 5.0 x16 connection is particularly interesting for high-end gaming laptop buyers. PCIe 5.0 offers approximately 4GB/s per lane in each direction before overhead, providing substantial bandwidth across a 16-lane interface.

This connectivity could enable powerful discrete GPUs with enough interface headroom for demanding workloads that frequently transfer data between system memory and graphics memory. However, the quoted specs do not independently verify the final PCIe design, and reducing integrated graphics re

For gamers, the practical benefit will depend on the GPU, application, and platform implementation. A full-width interface would nevertheless be an attractive feature if Intel and laptop manufacturers deliver it as rumored.

Core Ultra 4000 Branding Signals a New Generation

Intel is reportedly moving directly to the Core Ultra 4000 series for Nova Lake, aligning the naming structure across desktop and mobile products. This should make the generation easier to recognize and help distinguish flagship HX processors from other mobile configurations.

The numbering alone, however, says little about actual performance. Independent benchmarks and verified power specifications will ultimately determine how much Nova Lake improves upon existing hardware.
