A mystery box can turn an ordinary kids’ meal into a collector’s next stop. Burger King is using that appeal for a limited-time collaboration with Sanrio’s Hello Kitty and Friends, giving customers a reason to look beyond the food inside the bag.

Beginning October 20, participating US restaurants are offering six collectible figurines through the Hello Kitty and Friends King Jr. Kids’ Meal, according to Burger King’s October 19 announcement. The rollout pairs familiar characters with Burger King’s crown iconography and adds a rare golden variant.

In this article: six crowned collectibles, a surprise-box mechanic, and a one-day golden claw machine.

Six characters get the royal treatment

The lineup brings together Hello Kitty, My Melody, Kuromi, Cinnamoroll and Keroppi, alongside a golden-colored Hello Kitty. Each figurine wears a miniature Burger King crown, while some hold recognizable menu items. Those small details make the collection specific to the restaurant rather than generic Sanrio merchandise.

The toys are the visual centerpiece, but the packaging carries the idea further. Meals arrive in a Hello Kitty and Friends-themed King Jr. bag and include an exclusive paper crown while supplies last. Together, the character styling, toys and packaging make the collaboration recognizable at several points in the customer experience.

Mystery boxes turn meals into a hunt

Each eligible meal contains one toy in a sealed mystery blind box. Customers cannot see which character they have received until opening it, borrowing a familiar mechanic from collectible-toy culture. For fans hoping to complete the set, the reveal becomes part of the experience.

The rare golden-colored Hello Kitty adds another layer. Burger King says a limited number will be included in the six-toy lineup, and customers who find one may receive a complete set of all six figures at participating restaurants, subject to availability. The company has not disclosed the odds of receiving the golden toy in its US announcement.

Joel Yashinsky, Burger King’s US and Canada chief marketing officer, positioned the collaboration as an experience for kids and older fans alike. Sanrio chief brand officer Jill Koch highlighted the playful use of Burger King’s crowns on the characters.

A golden claw machine extends the launch

The campaign also moves beyond the counter. On October 23, Burger King plans a one-day Golden Claw Machine activation at its restaurant on Paramount Boulevard in Downey, California. Visitors can try for a Hello Kitty toy, with one one-of-one, 14-karat gold-plated Hello Kitty figurine among the prizes.

The event creates a physical expression of the same chance-based appeal used in the blind boxes. Burger King says the promotion has a no-purchase entry route under the official rules, and the event is restricted to eligible adult entrants. The wider King Jr. promotion remains available for a limited time at participating US locations while supplies last.

What marketers can learn from the collectibles

The creative principle is straightforward: a familiar licensed character becomes more distinctive when it is redesigned around the host brand’s own visual assets. The tiny crowns and food accessories give the toys a recognizable Burger King identity without changing the characters fans already know.

The blind-box format then turns distribution into an experience, while the one-day claw machine gives the story a second, event-driven moment. It is a combination of product design, collectibility and physical activation that can generate reasons to revisit the campaign. Burger King has announced the mechanics, but has not reported sales or engagement results.
