The news that Daredevil: Born Again would end with season three came as a shock to fans, but, apparently, not everyone in the cast was as surprised as we were. The series was a quasi-reboot, quasi-continuation of Netflix’s previous Daredevil show, which also ran for three seasons, from 2015 to 2018. Born Again brought back most of the major characters and actors from the Netflix series (though, for some of them, that return was frustratingly brief), and season three, which airs in March 2027, is set to feature a Defenders reunion with Luke Cage (Mike Colter), Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), and Iron Fist (Finn Jones).
If anything, with the upcoming Defenders reunion, it felt like Born Again was just getting started. But Deborah Ann Woll, who has played Karen Page since the beginning of the Netflix series, told <a href="https://comicbook.com/tv-shows/news/daredevil-star-deborah-ann-woll-on-karen-pages-mcu-future-after-born-again-ends/” rel=”nofollow noopener” target=”_blank”>Comic Book in a recent interview for her upcoming horror film The Cycle that Born Again ending with season three wasn’t a huge surprise.
“I mean, I think the first time we were canceled [with the Netflix show], we really didn’t know it was coming, right?” Woll said. ““Like, that third season of the Netflix one is my favorite of the three. And I thought it was really a high point in the series, and we fully expected to come back and do more. So I didn’t really get to say goodbye, and that felt like the rug being pulled out from under us. This one? You know, you’re never sure, but I think we all sort of felt like this was the last one… as we were wrapping things up.”
Of course, there are always behind-the-scenes decisions that fans aren’t privy to, so it makes sense that Woll would have better insight than the rest of us. After the news broke, Charlie Cox, who plays Matt Murdock, aka Daredevil, in both series, told GamesRadar he “had a good sense” the show was concluding, and Marvel TV head Brad Winderbaum said on the Brandon Davis Show that Born Again was always designed to end with season three.
It’s a bummer that Daredevil: Born Again is coming to an end, but it’s so much better for it to be able to go out on its own terms rather than get hit with a surprise cancelation. And in that interview with Brandon Davis, Winderbaum did offer a bit of hope: he said that after season three ends, “we will take a breath and figure out what’s next for the character.” Hopefully, this won’t be the last we see of Cox as the Man Without Fear.
