Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes has asked a court to force Roblox to hand over data and documents tied to an investigation into whether the gaming platform is adequately protecting children who use it. Mayes’s office says it filed a petition seeking an order that would compel the company to immediately produce the records, and, if Roblox still refuses, hold it in contempt until it fully complies.

According to a news release detailed by einpresswire.com, Mayes’s office filed a Petition for Enforcement of Civil Investigative Demands after the state says Roblox failed to provide complete responses to even its most limited priority requests, despite extensions and months of back-and-forth. The Arizona Attorney General’s Office is investigating Roblox Corporation for suspected violations of the state’s Consumer Fraud Act, examining whether the company failed to take basic precautions to protect Arizona children from sexual exploitation, violent content and other age-inappropriate material, and whether it misrepresented those safety issues to parents and consumers.

The state issued two civil investigative demands to Roblox, one in May 2026 and a second in August 2026, seeking information as part of that inquiry, per the same release. Arizona’s law on unlawful practices, as laid out by the Arizona Legislature, bars deception, deceptive or unfair acts, false promises, and misrepresentation; it also bars concealment, suppression, or omission of a material fact when intended to induce reliance in the sale or advertisement of merchandise — the legal basis underpinning the state’s demands.

Mayes Points to Predatory Contact and Graphic Content

Mayes said the evidence available to her office points to real dangers facing Arizona children on the platform, ranging from predatory contact to exposure to graphic violent and sexual content. The petition itself goes further, alleging that Roblox has been used by sexual predators to target children, and that the company’s user base includes hundreds of thousands of Arizona minors, according to the state’s filing.

Speaking to KVOA, Mayes said Roblox has built one of the world’s largest online platforms for children and has continually assured parents that the platform is safe. She added that companies interacting with children must be transparent about the risks their products pose, and said her office will not allow companies to obstruct its efforts to protect Arizona kids.

As 12News reported, Mayes claims Roblox has not provided complete responses even to the state’s most limited priority requests, a central sticking point behind the decision to escalate the matter to court.

Part of a Wider National Reckoning

Arizona’s move lands amid a broader wave of state and federal scrutiny of Roblox. The Federal Trade Commission is investigating the company over potential child-safety concerns tied to the design and use of its platform, a long-running probe that, per mlex.com, is likely to reach a conclusion before the end of 2026.

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier issued a subpoena to Roblox seeking information about how the company markets to children, verifies ages and moderates chat rooms, according to the Florida Attorney General’s Office. That subpoena sought documents on safeguards against mature content and the platform’s chat and game moderation capabilities. NBC News reported that Florida officials said the goal was to gather more information about alleged criminal activity on the platform, including evidence involving suspected predators and victims.

    Roblox’s Safety Measures

Roblox has described age-verification options using facial recognition or government ID. Roblox has said direct chat is off by default for players under nine, with voice chat restricted to age-checked players 13 or older. In response to Florida’s subpoena, Roblox said in a statement emailed to Reuters that it prohibits sharing images and videos in chat, uses filters to block exchanges of personal information, and its trained teams and automated tools continuously monitor communications for harmful content.

How Arizonans Can File a Complaint

The Arizona Attorney General’s Office says it accepts consumer complaints about suspected consumer fraud and maintains a Consumer Information and Complaints Unit reachable across the state. Phoenix-area residents can call 602-542-5763, Tucson-area residents can call 520-628-6648, and those outside metro areas can reach the unit at 800-352-8431.
