Harry Styles honored his late One Direction bandmate Liam Payne in concert on Friday.
On the second anniversary of Payne’s death, Styles shared a heartwarming tribute to the Building the Band alum, with whom he rose to fame.
“There’s so many people in my life, friends and people that I’ve worked with, that I’ve never been able to do this without them, and two years ago today I lost one of those friends,” Styles said on night 23 of his 30-show residency at Madison Square Garden.
Looking up at the banner commemorating his historic 15-consecutive-night sold-out residency at the venue during his previous tour, Styles again noted that there are many people who helped him succeed in his career, including Payne.
“There’s so many more people behind it, so many people that’ve touched my life, in such special ways, I wouldn’t be here without them,” he continued. “I’m gonna play a song that I wrote for my friend about two years ago, if that’s alright.”
He then began playing a never-before-heard song called “What Is Enough,” which he dedicated to his former bandmate.
Payne died on Oct. 16, 2024, at the age of 31 after falling from a third-floor balcony at the CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Palermo, Buenos Aires, Argentina. His cause of death was determined as “multiple traumas” and “internal and external hemorrhages,” according to an autopsy report.

He and Styles began their music careers alongside Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik, and Niall Horan in the boy band One Direction, which was formed on The X-Factor in 2010. They became one of the biggest boy bands of all time before going on indefinite hiatus in 2016. (Malik had left the band the previous year.)
Following Payne’s death, Styles, Tomlinson, Malik, and Horan issued a joint statement mourning their friend.
“We’re completely devastated by the news of Liam’s passing,” they began. “In time, and when everyone is able to, there will be more to say. But for now, we will take some time to grieve and process the loss of our brother, who we loved dearly.”
Their statement continued, “The memories we shared with him will be treasured forever. For now, our thoughts are with his family, his friends, and the fans who loved him alongside us. We will miss him terribly. We love you Liam.”
