AI’s newest frontier models, like OpenAI’s GPT-6-Astra, are reportedly causing serious problems in the gaming world’s “decompilation” communities, forcing one of the biggest communities, decomp.dev, to partially shut down.

Decompilation is when you try to reconstruct an existing game’sle). Once you’ve got the game’sa new platform, such as the recently taken-down Halo: Combat Evolved browser port. Some developers also use thenecraft building mechanics to 2022’s Elden Ring

In the official announcement, first spotted by 404 Media, decomp.dev’s pseudonymous admin, who goes by Encounter, explained how older AI models had shown “mixed” results when it came to decompilations, requiring “a significant amount of human cleanup and fixes for obvious issues” with a “prohibitively expensive” cost per task.

But new frontier models like GPT-6-Astra are changing this. These new models have the “ability to remain coherent and focused across long-horizon tasks” and can “achieve these better results faster and cheaper than earlier models could.”

However, despite these technical breakthroughs, models like Astra have “broken” the community aspect of decompilation due to “bad actors” abusing them. Opportunists are now reportedly using these advanced tools to release “half-baked, barely-functional” ports. The administrator also notes that the decompilation community, in their eyes, isn’t just about porting games—but about learning how old games work.

“For years, decompilation communities attempted to establish that decompilation is primarily for research: we love these games and want to understand how they work, and to uncover the mysteries that the original developers left behind.”

Decomp.dev will continue to track existing projects and serve individual project pages and historical data, but the main index and adding new projects are disabled.

Reactions on social media have been mixed so far. Some users on Reddit have accused the operators of “gatekeeping” and being unfair about the benefits of AI usage, while others agree with the decision.

Moves like this don’t seem likely to slow down the current momentum of the decompilation community. Browser ports of popular games like Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and Call of Duty: Black Ops have been rapidly appearing online in recent months, although, as many lack legal approval from publishers, they are likely to be hit with copyright complaints.

Big studios are already reacting: Xbox CEO Asha Sharma announced plans to create a new lab to explore AI-created game ports earlier this week.
