Geekend at Doha Film Institute Brings Gamers, Artists and Pop-Culture Fans Together

Doha Film Institute organised Geekend, a gathering for gamers, artists and pop-culture fans, according to the institute. This edition of the event places a greater emphasis on art, with stalls where artists can display and sell their work.

Geekend forms part of the institute’s Geekdom programme. Its founder, Abdulla Al Mosallam, said artists, writers and animators have met at these gatherings and later collaborated on new projects.

In the board-game area, Abdulrahman Al-Homaid, founder of Majlis Shabab, demonstrated his company’s version of Dama, a traditional game that has been given a new design. His team also develops original games, with the goal of encouraging people to talk and play around the same table.

For Khalifa Al-Haroun, founder of gaming retailer Store974, meeting in person allows fans to make friends and find others with shared interests. He also highlighted the artists selling items ranging from posters to small handmade goods.

Cosplayers attend dressed as their favourite characters, including figures from Japanese anime. At the Japanese embassy’s booth, visitors can try on kimonos and learn more about the culture behind many of the stories and games they enjoy.
