The Faraway Land gets an anime adaptation after 35 years; fans think it’s better to just leave it in storage.

After 35 years since its initial release, the popular 90s manga series “Faraway Land” has finally been adapted into an anime. However, after watching the first few clips, fans feel that their favorite manga would be better off “shelved.”

Faraway Land is a shoujo manga (a manga aimed at young female readers) created by Kyoko Hikawa, first published in 1991. Despite being an older manga , Faraway Land remains popular and is considered one of the best shoujo manga focusing on time travel and romance.

The story of The Distant Land revolves around Noriko, a high school girl who one day is transported to a strange land. She has no superpowers, doesn’t even know the local language, but is the protagonist of a prophecy that she is “Mezame”—the one who can unleash a world -destroying entity called the “Heavenly Demon.”

In a strange land teeming with bizarre creatures and people hunting Mezame, Noriko is helped by a young man named Izak. They journey together, but Noriko doesn’t realize that Izak is hiding a secret: that he harbors the evil entity, the Heavenly Demon.

After 35 years since its initial release, The Faraway Land has finally been adapted into an anime . Produced by Studio DEEN, the first episode aired this October. Fans had high expectations that the anime would be a hit, a “hit,” thanks to the excellent quality of the original manga .

However, in reality, the quality of the anime adaptation is so poor that viewers are unwilling to accept it as Faraway Land . The anime ‘s graphics are criticized as rudimentary, monotonous, boring, and even “distorted,” making the characters in the anime look nothing like the original manga .

Many sarcastic comments noted that it was surprising an anime produced in 2026 looked more “outdated” than a manga released in 1991. Most agreed that if their favorite manga were to be adapted into an anime with this kind of quality, it would be better to just “put it in storage.”

The complete 7-volume set will be published in Vietnam in 2025.

Here are some comments from netizens:

“Is this what you call modern expression?”

“Look at Noriko’s hairstyle in the anime; it’s even more outdated than the original manga, and the manga was released in 1991!”

“Studio DEEN never learned their lesson. They arbitrarily changed everything in the Fruits Basket anime adaptation to the point that even the original author hated it.”

“Don’t forget Studio DEEN also caused great disappointment with the Seven Deadly Sins anime.”

“It’s baffling to ruin one of the best transmigration manga ever created right in the middle of the genre’s boom, simply by ignoring the excellent original work. What’s the reasoning?”

“Just looking at the poster already makes it seem terrible.”

“The same thing happened with *Mysterious River*. It’s heartbreaking to see classic shoujo manga with such terrible graphics. Why would they do that to such amazing manga?”

“Just put the manga and anime side by side, and they don’t even look like the same character anymore.”

The series “The Distant Land” was previously published in Vietnam in a 14-volume edition. Recently, it has been reissued in a new 7-volume format, featuring larger and thicker volumes, an attractive design, and lovely accompanying gifts.
