ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X20 Gaming Handheld (Hardware) – Review

After spending time with the original ROG Ally, the ROG Ally X, and more recently the ROG Xbox Ally, ASUS has only so many ways to keep reshaping the same basic handheld idea before the differences start to feel minor. The ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X20 avoids that problem, combining substantial hardware upgrades with a special-edition design created to celebrate 20 years of Republic of Gamers.

Rather than the familiar white or black shells we’ve seen before, the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X20 uses a translucent black chassis with gold accents visible throughout the cooling hardware and internals. Gold lighting surrounds the joysticks, the Xbox button glows green, and a ROG 20th Anniversary badge sits on the rear. It’s still unmistakably part of the Ally family, but it feels much more like something designed to be kept rather than replaced the moment the next model arrives.

The biggest upgrade, however, is right in front of you: a new 7.4-inch OLED display running at 1920×1080 and 120Hz. It also supports FreeSync Premium Pro, with a 30Hz to 120Hz variable refresh range. Peak HDR brightness reaches 1400 nits, while 100% DCI-P3 coverage, Dolby Vision, and VESA DisplayHDR True Black 1400 support should give games considerably more punch than the IPS panels used in previous Ally models.

That immediately addresses one of the few complaints I had with the ROG Ally X, where screen glare could become distracting. ASUS now uses Gorilla Glass Victus, Gorilla Glass DXC and an anti-reflection coating designed to reduce reflections by up to 65%, which should make the OLED panel considerably easier to use outside controlled lighting.

Underneath it all is AMD’s Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, featuring eight cores, sixteen threads and speeds reaching up to 5GHz. It also has an XDNA NPU capable of up to 50 TOPS, though the more immediately useful upgrades for gaming are the 24GB of LPDDR5X memory and 1TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD.

Compared to the ROG Xbox Ally I reviewed previously, it’s a fairly substantial jump. That model used a Ryzen Z2 A alongside 16GB of memory and a 500GB SSD, while the older ROG Ally X already offered 24GB and 1TB. The ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X20 takes that stronger foundation and pairs it with a newer processor and considerably better display.

Putting that hardware to use, I spent some time playing EA Sports FC 27, and the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X20 handled it incredibly well. Matches ran smoothly, with player movement and camera transitions remaining fluid throughout, while the 1080p OLED display kept everything looking crisp even from the wider gameplay view.

Colours were also noticeably vibrant, particularly across the pitch, player kits and stadium lighting, but it was the consistently smooth performance that stood out most. For a game where quick reactions and responsive controls matter, it felt right at home on the handheld.

ASUS has also spent plenty of time refining the controls, adding new TMR joysticks that use magnetic sensors designed to improve precision while reducing the risk of stick drift, with RGB lighting around each stick adding to the anniversary styling. Hall Effect analogue triggers remain, now joined by impulse trigger feedback and HD haptics.

The transforming D-pad is probably the more interesting addition, as it can be lifted slightly and rotated 90 degrees. It’s great for switching between a stricter four-way layout for retro games and a more modern eight-way design better suited to fighting games and more fluid directional inputs. While I don’t often use anything other than the standard cross pattern, it is a clever idea that gives you two very different control styles without needing interchangeable parts.

The familiar controller-inspired shape from the ROG Xbox Ally also returns, with larger grips, rubberised textures and two assignable rear buttons that make the handheld feel closer to an Xbox controller than the flatter original Ally designs.

Windows 11 still sits underneath everything, meaning you’re not limited to a single storefront. Xbox, Steam, and other PC platforms remain available, while Armoury Crate Special Edition provides a more handheld-friendly way to manage games and system settings. You can access all of these by holding down the Xbox button, making it quick and easy to switch between apps.

Battery capacity sits at 80Wh, matching the ROG Ally X and improving considerably on the 60Wh battery used by the standard ROG Xbox Ally. A 68W USB-C adapter handles charging, while connectivity includes USB4, another USB-C 10Gbps connection, microSD Express, Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.4.

At 756g, the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X20 isn’t especially light, but the added weight comes from an 80Wh battery, considerably more powerful hardware and one of the best displays ASUS has put into an Ally so far.

The ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X20 feels like a fitting celebration of 20 years of ROG rather than a standard handheld with a different colour scheme. The translucent black-and-gold design gives collectors something distinctive, while the OLED display, Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme, TMR joysticks, and transforming D-pad provide meaningful upgrades over the models that came before it.

For anyone already using a ROG Ally X, the biggest temptation will probably be that OLED display and redesigned controls. Coming from the standard ROG Xbox Ally, however, the jump in processor, memory, storage, battery capacity and screen quality makes the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X20 feel like a much more substantial upgrade.
