Earlier this week, we reported that the Nintendo Switch classic Super Mario Odyssey is getting a PC port, which is currently in development. It’s based on recent advances in static recompilation for the Nintendo Switch, which is a process that converts and maps original hardware calls and architecture to modern PC hardware. Unlike emulation, it doesn’t reuse the original Switch hardware calls or even the game code, and because users must provide their own game assets, recompiled games sit in a grey area: technically legal, but still requiring game backups to work.
With the rise of AI-assisted coding, decompilation and recompilation projects for retro and console-exclusive games have exploded in recent months, and this week we’ve got our first native Nintendo Switch PC port. It’s for The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening, the Nintendo Switch remake of the 1993 action-adventure game in the iconic series for the Game Boy. With modern stylized visuals, the game is currently sitting on a respectable 87 score from critics over on Metacritic.

The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening PC port is available over on GitHub, with creator peiikai noting that the project was made “almost exclusively with AI,” specifically Claude Code. AI apparently handled all the reverse engineering, coding, and even documentation, and the project is available as a native Windows, macOS, and Linux application.

As a PC port, the game supports multiple resolutions and ultrawide aspect ratios not available in the Switch release, plus customizable controls, including keyboard and mouse support. One of the coolest features of this PC port is a customizable Randomizer that lets players shuffle item locations, dungeon layouts, and more, and seed and share remixed versions of the game with the community.
