Manga Day Returns to the Museum of Ethnography

The Museum of Ethnography in Budapest will once again open its doors on July 25 to all fans of East Asian culture. Following the great success of the spring edition, the second edition of the all-day event promises an exciting bridge between centuries-old traditions and modern pop culture

Manga Day is directly connected to thecurrent exhibition “Manga – Hokusai – Manga: Approaching the Master’s Compendium from the Perspective of Contemporary Comics.” Visitors will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in Japan’s visual world. Through expert lectures, curator-led tours and open discussion sessions, the event will highlight a fascinating connection:

how the more than 200-year-old legacy of the legendary artist Katsushika Hokusai has influenced today’s modern manga

The event places a strong emphasis on interactive experiences. Visitors who wish not only to watch but also to experience the culture firsthand can try their hand at various traditional arts:

    • Crafts: Workshops on traditional ukiyo-e woodblock printing and Japanese calligraphy.
    • Creativity: Designing fans featuring traditional Japanese patterns or modern anime motifs.
    • Fashion and expression: An introduction to gesture painting and the opportunity to try on an authentic yukata (a lightweight summer kimono).

The lecture program covers a wide range of topics. Subjects include the supernatural beings (yokai) of Japanese folklore, the history of manga publishing in Hungary, modern otaku culture, and the long-standing tradition of Japanese puppetry

The colorful program will be complemented by pop-up exhibitions, video games, and performances of traditional Japanese “paper play” (kamishibai) in the original language

Visitors looking for a calmer experience away from the bustle will also find opportunities for relaxation. Introductory sessions on Zen Buddhism, meditative shakuhachi bamboo flute performances, and peaceful calligraphy workshops will create an authentic and tranquil atmosphere

The programs will conclude with a dynamic finale: Manga Day will end with a modern anime music concert and a powerful traditional Japanese taiko drum performance, bringing the celebrations to a memorable close
