CLARKSVILLE, TN – Matt Schorr, a Clarksville writer with a reputation for tales about the macabre and featured in local publications like The Leaf-Chronicle newspaper and Clarksville Living Magazine, plans to celebrate Halloween at Rick’s Comic City in Clarksville for a special book and comic signing on Oct. 31.

Rick’s opened its doors at 1923 Madison St., Suite H, in 2015. Since then, it’s touted one of the best selections of comic book issues and trades in Middle Tennessee, along with artwork and titles from local creators.

Many Clarksville readers know Matt best for his previous humor column “The Hard Way,” his restaurant reviews, and his articles describing local ghost stories. He’s also responsible for spooky tales for readers young and old in both novel and comic book formats. Some of his titles include:

    • Dino Horrors
    • Moby Dick: Back from the Deep
    • The Hannigan Chronicles
    • Boot Hill Horrors

    Inspiration

Matt recalls childhood nights spent in front of the television watching late night horror hosts Elvira, Joe Bob Briggs, and the Crypt Keeper, as well as monstrous icons like Dracula, the Wolfman and Freddy Krueger.

“Most kids had sports heroes,” he quips. “I had Jason Voorhees and Michael Myers.”

As he grew older, Matt’s love for all things spooky carried over to novels by horror luminaries like Joe R. Lansdale, H.P. Lovecraft and Stephen King. It even influenced his comic book reading habits, as Superman and Green Arrow were soon joined by Hellboy and John Constantine.

“So of course, that influenced what I want to write,” Matt said. “I want to see all things scary on TV. I want to read about them in books. I’m sure no one is surprised I want to write about them, too.”

    Honing his craft

Matt first honed his skills as a writer while working with the Mayfield Messenger, a community newspaper in his hometown of Mayfield. While there was never breaking news about ghosts or monsters, he developed his craft for the first time at a Messenger desk.

“There’s no teacher like experience,” Matt recalls of his time at the local paper. “You can only learn so much in classes. As valuable and important as that is, nothing prepares you for professional writing like writing professionally. For me, that was crime reports, courtroom drama, local politics and the occasional theater review for the local community theater..

“And of course, the time a cow was loose on the court square.”

    Still writing

Writing remains the centerpiece of Matt’s career. He currently works with Vanderbilt Health managing communications efforts in clinical trial recruitment. At the same time, he still contributes restaurant reviews and spotlights on local haunted legends in Clarksville Living.
