Disney is giving a critically panned fantasy adaptation a second shot, and this time the story is heading to the small screen in animated form. The 2020 film drew an 8% Tomatometer score from 178 reviews, which gave it its worst tagline, and audiences were not much kinder, giving it 19% on the Popcornmeter across more than 2,500 ratings.
Artemis Fowl to get a new animated series
Disney has greenlit an animated Artemis Fowl series for Disney Channel and Disney+. Author Eoin Colfer revealed the news on Sunday at New York Comic-Con, during the “25 Years of Artemis Fowl” panel. Colfer will serve as executive producer. The announcement came more than two decades after Colfer introduced the character to readers.
The book series launched in 2001 and follows a 13-year-old genius who discovers a hidden world of armed, surprisingly high-tech fairies. Artemis hatches a plan to capture one and steal its magic, hoping to heal his dying mother and save his family. Colfer said he feels good about the project’s direction. “I am proud and delighted to be part of the formidable team that is putting the Artemis Fowl animation on screen,” he said. “Everyone is so talented and so positive that I feel certain the fairy world is in excellent hands.”
Ayo Davis, president of Disney Kids & Family, framed the series as a chance to reach both new and loyal audiences. “For more than two decades, Eoin Colfer’s Artemis Fowl books have captivated readers around the world with unforgettable characters, imaginative world-building, and gripping adventures,” Davis said. “Bringing this beloved franchise to life as an animated series gives us the opportunity to introduce a new generation to Artemis’ world while honoring the longtime fans who have cherished these stories for years.”
Davis’s comments suggest Disney wants to win back readers who felt let down by the live-action version. Having the original author involved as an executive producer should also give fans some reassurance that theney has not yet shared details about casting, a release date, or the number of episodes. The series will land on both Disney Channel and Disney+
