The growth of concerts and performances in the country is contributing to the formation of increasingly well-organized and large-scale fan communities. This is also the context for the creation of Fandom Universe , aiming to bring the story of artists and fans to television.
To transform the vibrant lives of fans on social media into a television format, the production team had to study the characteristics of each fandom, select suitable stories, and plan the presentation to appeal to a wide range of audiences. Editor Huong Anh, representing the production team of the “Fandom Universe” program, shared insights into the program’s development process, from the initial concept to incorporating public feedback.
Bringing fandom culture to television
In recent years, the Vietnamese cultural and entertainment market has seen an increase in concerts and performances. Alongside this trend is the development of fan communities, including groups with large memberships and regular activities.

A fandom is not just a group of people who share a love for an artist. Each community can have its own name, organization, operating principles, symbolic system, and methods of interaction. Many activities are formed and spread primarily on social media before expanding into real life.
Against that backdrop, VTV3 built the Fandom Universe as a meeting point between artists and fans. Presenter Huong Anh stated that the program was created during a period of significant development in Vietnam’s cultural and entertainment industry, particularly the growth of concerts and the fan community.
Bringing fandoms to television requires more than just recreating the vibrant atmosphere of fan activities. The content needs to be organized into clear, coherent stories, while also allowing viewers unfamiliar with modern fandom terminology or models to follow along.
Viewing fandom from the perspective of commonalities across generations.
One of the first questions the team asked when developing the format was how to address the differing perceptions of fan communities. Fandoms are sometimes perceived through certain prominent behaviors on social media, while the activities and composition of each community in reality are quite different.

Through their research, editor Huong Anh and her team realized that showing affection for an artist or art form is not a new phenomenon. Throughout history, fans have formed communities centered around classical music , bands, or artists beloved by the public. The main differences lie in the names, means of connection, and ways of expressing that affection.
Regardless of age or style, they all share a common love for the artist they admire.
Editor Huong Anh – Production Director of Fandom Universe
The program features fandoms of young artists, operating on a modern model and influenced by international fan culture. Alongside these are long-established communities with members from various age groups. This allows the production team to reflect diverse forms of fandom instead of focusing solely on one specific audience segment.
Artists are selected based on the stories of their communities.
When selecting artists and fandoms to participate, the team doesn’t just consider popularity or the number of members. Editor Huong Anh emphasized that the program’s overarching criterion is to find the story of each community and consider their place within the overall picture the program aims to portray.

The guest list is therefore carefully considered to reflect diversity in age, artistic style, and length of activity. Communities that are currently gaining attention may reflect current trends, while long-standing fandoms offer stories of the artist’s journey with their audience.

The differences also lie in the culture of each fan club (FC). Some communities organize activities in a relatively tight system, some focus on social projects, while some FCs concentrate on cheering or creating content on digital platforms. These characteristics are researched by the production team before determining how to utilize them on air.
The selection process is therefore inseparable from behind-the-scenes research. Understanding the history, personality, and operating methods of each community helps the team determine appropriate content, while also avoiding generalizations about fandoms.
Receiving feedback from young audiences.
Besides on-air content, Fandom Universe operates on platforms popular with young people, including Threads. Editor Huong Anh stated that the team monitors audience feedback on these platforms and uses it as a valuable re
Feedback is incorporated into visual elements such as images and branding. When feedback is received regarding presentation, the team considers adjustments to make the program more aligned with the aesthetic trends and content consumption habits of younger audiences.

Audience feedback is also considered in terms of visuals and branding. By receiving comments regarding presentation, the team can adjust the content to better suit the aesthetic trends and viewing habits of the younger audience.

Balancing youthful expression with broad accessibility.
A program about fandom needs to use language, visuals, and interaction methods that resonate with young people. However, if it relies too heavily on jargon or short-lived trends, the content may become inaccessible to audiences unfamiliar with fandom culture.

The challenge for the production team was to preserve the unique characteristics of each community while still providing enough information for a wide audience to follow. Therefore, in addition to a youthful presentation style, the program focuses on universal stories such as the love, companionship, and connection between artists and the public.
The goal of connecting generations also influences the content creation process. Younger fandoms reflect how fans use digital platforms and organize communities today, while long-standing audience groups help broaden perspectives on the history of fan culture.
From its initial concept to its broadcast, Fandom Universe was built on a process of researching each community, selecting stories, and adjusting the presentation methods. Through this, the program provides another perspective on fandom culture within the context of the rapidly changing Vietnamese entertainment scene.
