The very existence of 2002’s “The Dead Zone” TV series is surprising at first glance. The book it’s based on, Stephen King’s 1979 supernatural thriller of the same name, ends on a definitive note. In 1983, the book received a movie adaptation starring Christopher Walken, and with a runtime of under two hours, it did the book justice. How could a six-season adaptation not feel stretched out?

The answer becomes clear by the show’s second episode. The TV series takes the middle section of the book — where protagonist Johnny (Anthony Michael Hall) starts using his newfound psychic powers to solve crimes — and makes it the basis of a case-of-the-week mystery series. It’s a simple, clever change that easily makes this one of the best Stephen King adaptations.

If you’re a “Dead Zone” fan who loved the book’s episodic middle section, the 2002 series is right up your alley. You can find it for free on streaming services like Tubi and Roku. It’s also available on paid streaming sites like Prime Video, or you can buy it outright on Fandango or Apple TV.

Anthony Michael Hall loved how intense the show was

Speaking to the Associated Press before the series premiere, Anthony Michael Hall shared just how excited he was to play a psychic who not only deals with disturbing crimes, but often finds himself embodying the spirit of those involved. “There are no limits,” he said. “I go from being a killer in some episodes to being a victim in some episodes. The whole idea of transference and becoming other people is intense, and challenging as an actor.”

While Hall didn’t receive any award nominations for his role, his captivating performance (and the fun variety of weekly cases) helped the show perform well enough in the ratings to last six seasons; not bad for a series with roughly 400 pages to work from. In a way, “The Dead Zone” was similar to the later HBO series “The Leftovers,” another show that excelled by straying from its

Despite its departures from the book, what helped “The Dead Zone” more than anything was the fact that executive producer Michael Piller always wanted to stay true to the spirit of a good Stephen King story. Like other Stephen King shows, the series featured plenty of spooky moments. “We’re very much committed to satisfying the Stephen King audience,” Piller told AP. Hall shared his sentiment, “[Stephen King fans have] come to expect darkness and the macabre stuff. They will certainly get that.” Fans of King’s novel can verify Hall’s claim themselves now that every episode of “The Dead Zone” is available to stream for free on Tubi and Roku.
