South Africa vs Australia Test series 2026: Preview
Australia will lock horns against South Africa in a three-match away Test series, starting on October 9, at Kingsmead in Durban.
The visitors will be without two names for the opener. Cameron Green is out with an abdominal injury, picked up in the third ODI against South Africa in Potchefstroom, while Josh Inglis has fractured a finger. The Aussies have drafted in Nic Maddinson and Sam Harper to their Test squad as replacements.
For the hosts, Kagiso Rabada has failed to make the cut. The pacer hasn’t played a competitive game since the IPL ended in May. He hurt his hamstring in training in August, and South Africa are hopeful he’ll be ready for the second Test. As his replacement, Anrich Nortje has been called up to play a Test for the first time in three years.
The World Test Championship race is also heating up, which gives this series extra bite. Australia sit on top with a points percentage of 80, while South Africa are second on 75. The hosts, however, have a hidden edge as they’ve played only four Tests in the 2025-27 cycle, compared with ten for Australia.
