Downgrade and Courtroom Loss Erase Roblox’s September Bounce

Roblox (RBLX) shares fell 8.1% over the past 3 weeks and now trade near $42. The online gaming platform rallied in mid-September, but those gains faded by month end. A Wall Street downgrade and a court ruling did most of the damage. Together, they revived doubts about Roblox’s recovery.

Jefferies cut Roblox to Underperform with a $38 target, and shares dropped 3% that day. The firm argued the stock’s roughly 30% rally after Q2 already priced in too much bookings growth. Bookings measure what players spend on Robux, the platform’s virtual currency, before accounting deferrals. Jefferies expects the U.S. and Canada recovery to be slower and costlier than investors hope.

Days earlier, a judge rejected Roblox’s bid to dismiss Los Angeles County’s child exploitation lawsuit. The court said Section 230, a law shielding platforms from user content claims, did not cover Roblox’s safety practices. However, the ruling is not a finding that the allegations are true. Still, it raises the risk of higher legal and compliance costs.

Both headlines hit a business still digesting a weak Q2. Bookings grew just 8% to $1.6 billion, and Q3 guidance implies a 14% to 18% decline. CEO David Baszucki told analysts, “We’re really navigating a period of normalization, following a year of massive growth.” Going forward, investors want proof that this normalization has a floor.

    RBLX Guided Valuation Model (TIKR)
    • Revenue Growth (CAGR): 14.0%
    • Net Income Margin: -6.0%
    • P/E Change (CAGR): 0%

Based on these mid-case inputs realized through 12/31/30, the model estimates a target price of $86. This implies a 108.2% total return from the $41 share price and an 18.8% annualized return over 4.2 years.

That annual return clears the 15% threshold for genuine undervaluation. The model assumes 14.0% yearly revenue growth, far below the 33.2% pace of the past 3 years. That haircut reflects the bookings reset and tough comparisons against 2025’s viral hits. It also leaves room for upside if new content types catch on.

Profitability remains the weak link. The mid-case still assumes a -6.0% net income margin, so accounting losses continue through 2030. Cash flow tells a better story, since Q2 free cash flow rose 66% to $294 million. Deferral explains the gap, because Roblox recognizes revenue over a 27-month average paying user lifetime.

Sentiment has swung harder than engagement. Shares traded at $142 within the past year and now sit 70% lower. Yet daily active users grew 10% to 123 million in Q2, while hours rose 5% to 29 billion. So players keep showing up even as spending per hour slips.

This is a drawdown and recovery story. Roblox retuned its discovery algorithm, the system that recommends games, to reward long-term retention over quick spending. Management says testing shows retention gains eventually outweigh the revenue hit, but it gave no timeline. If that crossover arrives in 2027, today’s price could look too pessimistic.

Roblox Fights for Every Hour of Play

Take-Two Interactive (TTWO) is the clearest public benchmark for game spending. Its fiscal Q1 net bookings fell 3% to $1.39 billion, softer than Roblox’s 8% bookings growth. However, Take-Two reiterated full-year net bookings guidance of $8.0 billion to $8.2 billion. That confidence rests on Grand Theft Auto VI, which launches November 19.

The GTA VI launch matters for Roblox. It could pull older players and their wallets away during the holiday quarter. Roblox has been courting older users and broader genres, including 2D games. So a blockbuster rival release will test how sticky that push really is.

Epic Games, owner of Fortnite, competes more directly for creators. Epic does not publish detailed financials, but it runs its own player-built game ecosystem. Roblox answered in September with tools to publish games as standalone apps on mobile, PC, and consoles. It also expanded Build, an AI tool that turns text prompts into playable games.

RBLX NTM Revenues vs TTWO (TIKR)

Valuation reflects Roblox’s heavy investment phase. The stock trades at 23.0x forward EV/EBITDA and about 4.0x forward revenue. Yet consensus expects revenue to grow just 6.9% a year over the next 2 years. That gap between multiple and growth is exactly what Jefferies flagged.

    What’s Driving RBLXStock Going Forward?

New products offer the upside case. Roblox plans web-based play for late 2026, which could remove the need to download an app. Standalone app distribution also helps creators reach players outside Roblox’s own storefront. Both moves aim to grow the audience rather than squeeze existing users.

Safety and regulation remain constant pressures. The EU now treats Roblox as a very large online platform, which brings stricter rules. Australia and the Philippines also secured child safety commitments this summer. Meanwhile, age check penetration reached 57% globally, and Baszucki said that strengthens the long-term outlook.

Buybacks help at the margin. Roblox repurchased 8.2 million shares for about $380 million in Q2 alone. With roughly $1.2 billion of net cash, it can keep buying while shares stay depressed. Still, bookings must stabilize before buybacks can move the stock.
