Popular code repository and developer platform GitHub has recovered after dealing with some major issues affecting its website and many GitHub services on Wednesday. According to a status message at 8:26 PM ET, the company has rolled back the changes to its database infrastructure that were apparently causing the issues and said the service is now “fully operational.” GitHub was acquired by Microsoft in 2018.
When we first published this story, navigating to the main GitHub site displayed an error message stating “No servers are currently available to serve your request,” but the site quickly became operational again. (The error message also included an image of an angry unicorn.) GitHub’s incident report also lists issues with Pull Request, GitHub Pages, Copilot, and the GitHub API.
The situation seemed to escalate quickly. GitHub’s first status message came at 7:11 PM ET, but minutes later, GitHub reported issues with multiple of its services. The issues appear to be widespread, with DownDetector showing over 10,000 user reports of the issues, and the issues were reported quite suddenly. At 7:13 p.m., network monitoring service NetBlocks also announced that GitHub was “experiencing an international outage.”
GitHub did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Updated on August 14th: GitHub says it has resumed after major outage.
