GTA 6 rival releases on Xbox and PS5 this week, perfect for that Vice City wait

While we wait for Rockstar Games to release Grand Theft Auto VI on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, players have a few alternatives to tuck into.

We’ve previously cited games like Watch Dogs 2 and Sleeping Dogsas some of the best GTA alternatives to play while you wait for Grand Theft Auto VI.

But one that hit our radars when it came to PC earlier this year was Samson by Liquid Swords, an open world action-adventure that takes a lot of inspiration from GTA.

Originally released on PC back in April, Samson: A Tyndalston Storyreceived mixed reviews when it first came out due to some perceived design flaws and issues with the gameplay that players discovered.

It also had a myriad of bugs and performance problems which exacerbated this reception. The fact it was PC-only also led to a lot of people skipping on the release.

Since then, Liquid Swords has taken the time to polish the game and release a series of free updates which include bug fixes, quality-of-life improvements, and even a load of new features to flesh the game out, massively enhancing the experience.

This has led to the game getting a console release, which was always the plan but a solid date wasn’t confirmed until earlier this month

Samson: A Tyndalston Story will be released for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S tomorrow, September 21.

What future content will Samson get?

Liquid Swords has revealed in a Q&A the graphical modes that Samson will target on console. On Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5, the game will have a 30fps Quality Mode and a 60fps Performance Mode.

Meanwhile, the PS5 Pro has the same modes but at a “higher visual quality” compared to a base PS5, while the Xbox Series S will only have one graphical mode targeting 30fps.

What’s more, Liquid Swords also revealed that it will apparently drop the game’s “biggest update” on the same date, meaning that players on PC also have a reason to revisit Samson if they dropped off earlier this year.

The developer hasn’t given details on what else the future of the game holds, but it has said that “what we can develop beyond the next release will depend on player response and what we can sustainably support, so we do not want to promise specific content before those plans are confirmed.”

It also confirmed that additional story content is among some of the ideas being explored, but nothing has been set in stone yet.

Samson: A Tyndalston Story is out for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S on September 21, 2026.

Its release comes around eight weeks before the release of Grand Theft Auto VI, set to be one of the biggest game launches of the generation and has generated immeasurable amounts of hype.
