TCG Card Shop Simulator (Switch 2) Review

    The real one.

TCG Card Shop Simulator is likely to sneak past a lot of players for a very odd reason. The eShop is crammed full of low effort clones of it, along with Supermarket Simulator, following the success of both games on Steam. That said, the very reason there are so many clones is because TCG Card Shop Simulator is pretty fun and highly addictive.

Like most shop simulators, you’ll start with a tiny space, a checkout counter, and a little money. From there you’ll begin stocking and selling products. This will generate revenue to not only restock those products, but purchase licenses to sell additional products. Its a naturally satisfying gameplay loop of watching the numbers go up and you manage your profit margins and multitask between ordering products, stocking shelves, and checking out customers. As you progress you’ll begin hiring staff, allowing you to automate certain tasks. Slowly your day to day becomes less about managing individual customers, and more about tracking the flow of products and continually optimizing and growing your store. Unlike some other games of this type, most items can be displayed on any type of shelf which can make progress feel a bit less obvious at times. There is no moment where a major purchase opens up an entire new category of products as you might see in other games of this type.

TCG Card Shop Simulator adds a few unique elements to the genre. Your store doubles as a play space for people to meet up and play the Pokemon-inspired trading card game that your inventory will be primarily built around. Players pay for table time making it essentially free income but tables take up a lot of floor space. You can also open packs of cards yourself and sell the cards individually or even bundle bulk cards together to sell for a discounted price. You can even build a deck yourself and actually play the in-game card game.

The Switch 2 handles TCG Card Shop Simulator just fine for the most part. It isn’t an especially attractive game but given the amount of customization and number of characters that can be on screen at any time, I was pleased to see how smoothly everything ran. That said I did encounter a few items that seemed bugged in that their textures never actually loaded in. This made them a little difficult to recognize visually when looking to restock them.

What TCG Card Shop Simulator brings to the larger genre of shop simulators, is a real understanding of working in this exact kind of shop. That comes through in its unique multilayered approach to item values both sealed and opened. You’ll even need to have air freshener on hand for guests who smell bad. It is a very self aware game which gives it a lot of charm. If you’ve ever wondered why the eShop is so full of identical clones of this game, you owe it to yourself to try the original.

    Summary

    Pros
    • Deeply understands its niche of retail
    • Lots of room for strategy
    • Runs smoothly on Switch 2
    Cons
    • Lack of unique product requirements makes progress less obvious
    • Some texture loading bugs
