‘Clayface’ and 5 Other Superhero Movies With Horrific Twists

Comic books are no stranger to horror, but for as popular as they may be, superheroes and horror movies rarely mix. More often than not, they prioritize special effects and deliver bombastic setpieces that seem tailor-made to make audiences burst out in cheers. It’s rare to think of a superhero movie as scary, but there are a handful of superhero movies made by DC, Marvel, and even smaller indie publishers that include a healthy amount of horror in the equation.
And we’re not just talking about a spooky scene here or there. We’re talking about being genuine horror movies from their very core. Clayface(2026) is the most recent example of this, injecting plenty of body horror and psychological thriller elements into a character that hasn’t seen much representation in film, but it’s hardly the only one. If you fancy yourself a fan of the capes and costumes with a dash of the macabre, these movies will both delight and send a chill down your spine.
Mike Flanagan is one of the most trusted names in horror right now, so hearing how he wrote the screenplay and intended to direct Clayface,if it wasn’t for Carrie (2026), should clue you in on how important this horrorific reinvention of Matt Hagan means to him.
The film is focused on Hagan’s mental degradation, going from a rising movie star to a vicious and amorphous creature made of clay. Valid comparisons can be made between Clayfaceand Joker (2019), since both films are technically comic book movies, but they never frame themselves or the action within the usual tropes of the genre. Both are grimy character dramas that aren’t afraid to be dark and mean-spirited, and with Clayfaceplanning on adding in a heaping dose of body horror, it could make the film perfect for those seeking to scratch the same itch that The Substance (2024) brought forth. Regardless of the film’s success, it was a bold swing for DC to make this one of their first big releases in James Gunn’s burgeoning DCU.

When people think of The Crow,they tend to think of Brandon Lee and his tragic death while making the film. Few tend to think of it as a superhero movie, but lo and behold, the film is actually based on a 1989 comic book series with plenty of dark superheroics.
What gives The Crowa supernatural air is how its protagonist, Eric Draven, is a revenant, a cursed corpse brought back to life for the sole purpose of revenge. From the get-go, we see Draven murdered, his girlfriend violated, and the criminals getting away with it scot-free. We understand instantly why Draven wants vengeance, and thanks to his immortality and ability to transfer pain from person to person, he’ll use his newfound powers to get it done. All that’s well and good, and it does make The Crowa deeply emotional story, but it’s the production design that makes this Gothic superhero story shine, with grand architecture and soaring cinematography as grand as Tim Burton’s Batman (1989). It’s a shame Lee died, but at least he left us with a delicious, dark, and grim superhero movie that’s both beautiful and tragic.

There’s nothing like a good monster movie, and watching Wesley Snipes take on the role of Blade to kill hordes of vampires is nothing short of entertaining.
It may be an early ‘2000s action movie, but Blade II has the same ‘90s attitude that the original film had, just with a little more drama and a lot more gruesome vampire-killing violence. It was rare for a superhero movie back then to earn an R-rating, but it came with plenty of decapitations, lots of gore, and dozens of dead vampires. To make things even better, the film was directed by the master of horror himself, Guillermo del Toro, who brought the same love for practical effects to Blade II that he would bring to later films like Pan’s Labyrinth (2006). The Reapers alone are terrifying enough on their own to make Blade IIa great horror film, and that’s before they open their godforsaken mouths! Blade IIis dark, gruesome, and by all accounts, the best Blademovie there will ever be (sorry Mahershala Ali).

Batman has a long, storied history in horror dating back all the way to the Golden Age of comics. He may not be as synonymous with terror as other DC heroes like Swamp Thing or John Constantine, but plenty of Batman stories feature Bruce fighting the supernatural and creatures of the night. Case in point: Batman: The Doom That Came To Gotham.
What helps set Batman: The Doom That Came To Gothamapart from other Batman horror stories was how it was considered an Elseworld, or out-of-continuity, story. Because of that, it allowed the film to really go out there with its brand of horror, having Batman contend with Lovecraftian nightmares beyond our comprehension. Classic Batman heroes and villains are twisted into unrecognizable monsters, and the film will gladly murder its cast to prove how unfathomably evil these entities are. Limited animation aside, seeing this 90-minute reinvention of the Batman mythos is worth a trip to this strange alternative take on DC’s most popular sub-franchise.

The New Mutants was a victim of circumstance. Caught between the Disney/Fox merger, iced for three years, and released during the pandemic, few, if anyone, thought it would see the light of day. And yet it did. And you know what? It’s not that bad.
Oh sure, the film has its flaws, like choppy pacing, a too-brief 94-minute runtime, and some pretty dull sets and presentation, but it managed to bring horror to the X-Menseries at a time when the franchise was all about huge, dull apocalyptic threats. The young mutants that made up the film’s cast all had their powers painted in a horrific light, like Sunspot’s fire being a source of constant suffering for him. There’s a lot of psychological trauma they go through, made all the worse by creepy smiling monsters stalking our heroes throughout the film. At a time when comic book movies were incredibly risk-averse, it was nice seeing The New Mutantstake that risk and deliver a more horrific take on Chronicle (2012), even if it wasn’t the best version of the film director Josh Boone wanted to present to audiences.

When people think of Image Comics, there’s a good chance they’ll think of Spawn. As Image’s premier franchise, creator Todd McFarlane went into overtime in the ‘90s, making sure everyone knew who Spawn was. There was obviously the comic, but there were also action figures, video games, and, of course, a feature film.
While the film may have some incredibly dated CGI, there’s a fair amount to like about Spawn.Despite the hellish imagery that litters the film’s 96-minute runtime, there’s actually a lot of cheese and campiness that makes it impossible not to admire. After all, the film has John Leguizamo as The Violator, a foul-mouthed, demonic, clown-like thing who is having the time of his life playing a truly reprehensible monster. The film is oozing ‘90s edge, complete with a banging metal soundtrack that any metalhead would thrash to in a pit. It may not exactly be scary, but it’s fun in the same way that Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance (2011) is fun. It takes itself so seriously you can’t help but appreciate how hard it commits to being the perfect movie for the kind of people who shop exclusively at Hot Topic.
