Mets fandom getting caught red-handed with Pete Alonso moment should vindicate Yankees

We can’t not talk about it. That would be content malpractice. And we’re not here to fan the flames or instigate anybody. We’re simply here to address THE fan revolt moment of the season. That’s right, Red Sox fans, your little fake protests that last 10 minutes before your team goes on an historic heater don’t count. Boycott John Henry all you want for March – May. You’re fake.

On Tuesday night, baseball fans everywhere were watching the Mets-Orioles series closely. Yankees fans will admit they were, too. Pete Alonso was making his return to Citi Field since departing the Mets in free agency and he was one home run away from securing 300.

As fate would have it, Alonso did just that. He hit a game-tying blast in the ninth inning that would lead to an Orioles victory in extras. The night prior, Mets fans were salivating as Alonso just missed a homer a few feet left of the foul ple. On Tuesday night, they cheered Alonso on after TYING THE GAME and then gave him a curtain call. Did we mention Pete Alonso is not on the Mets? Wanted to make sure that was clear.

It’s understandable some fans feel passionately about his departure, directing their ire at Steve Cohen (the richest owner in the sport) and the front office (David Stearns, whose attempts to improve the roster have been largely horrific). Alonso was a fan favorite and is the franchise’s all-time home run leader. He was one long-term contract away from being a lifetime/iconic Met. We’ll never know what truly went down, but we doknow that the Mets did not out-bid the Orioles’ five-year, $155 million offer.

The fans’ reaction to Alonso’s moment — also understandably! — upset Mets players, which then got Mets fans even MORE incensed.

This might legitimately be the first time the fans of a home fans abandoned their team in support of an opposing player. Call Yankees fans insufferable all you want for booing Juan Soto, but they stick with their guys. They have their gripes with the front office and management, but they don’t openly disrespect the team they support in such a brash and ridiculous manner.

What’s even more puzzling is that … the Mets offered Alonso a contract extension (seven years, $158 million) before he was set to hit free agency. He rejected it, fired his agent, hired Scott Boras, took a lesser offer after a poor contract year, and then essentially skipped town for an extra ~$30 million. And Mets fans are unequivocally pointing the finger at Cohen and the front office?

Also, not to mention, though Alonso was a fan favorite, he accomplished quite literally nothing of consequence as a Met outside of his Rookie of the Year win back in 2019. The Mets made the playoffs twice during his tenure with the team and the farthest they got was the NLCS. Alonso’s 16-game postseason sample size is beastly, but he’s had little to show for it (except breaking Devin Williams, his eventual teammate).

I recognize that this team has given me many reasons to be embarrassed to be a Mets fan, but these past two nights have easily been the most embarrassed I’ve ever been to call myself a Mets fan.

    — Greg Kaplan (@BlueshirtsBreak) September 16, 2026

All in all, he’s just a good (and very durable) baseball player. The Mets didn’t allow a perennial MVP candidate to leave for a division rival. They didn’t tell a World Series champion to take a hike. They didn’t even send a top draft pick packing (Alonso was selected in the second round). They were simply exhausted by contract negotiations the season prior and decided they were ready to move on.

Was it the right decision? Clearly not. Jorge Polanco has been a complete waste. But was it an unforgivable decision that deserves interminable scorn? Don’t think so! We’ve seen plenty of Mets fans rage against Alonso when he went into bouts of striking out in addition to making defensive miscues (-7.3 dWAR for his career). They even cheered Vladimir Guerrero Jr., his theoretical replacement, as a visitor as Alonso looked on. Yeah. But you guys were always hopelessly devoted to him, right?

    — WFAN Sports Radio (@WFAN660) September 15, 2026

Cohen went out and spent $800 million on Juan Soto, which was supposed to represent a changing of the guard as a massive middle finger to the Yankees. Have Mets fans already forgotten about that after they spent last weekend rubbing it in everyone’s face? Do Mets fans actually think this is David Stearns’ fault? Cohen says when and where to spend the money. Stearns is advising to improve the margins of the roster.

Yankees fans aren’t sitting here claiming to be innocent. The endless Brian Cashman screeds that can be found online are plentiful and many of them are wild overreactions. It all comes down to how far down is a fanbase willing to stoop? Mets fans unlocked a new level of shamelessness on Tuesday, and it was nice to see some admit it was a low point for the franchise.
