Nintendo says more Zelda 40th Anniversary Switch 2 stock is incoming, as scalpers cash in

Nintendo has confirmed that stock for its Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Collection will be replenished after pre-orders for the limited-edition Switch 2 console and its matching accessories sold out within hours, a delay that’s already let scalpers flood eBay with wildly inflated listings that include the game iself.

The first limited edition Switch 2 console has an availability problem

The collection marks Switch 2’s first-ever special edition console, featuring a black-and-gold Triforce dock and forest green Joy-Cons, alongside a matching Pro Controller and stand, a Triforce-branded carry case, and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake. Priced at $519.99, just a $20 premium over the standard Switch 2’s post-price-hike cost of $499.99, the console sold out at Best Buy, Walmart, Target, Amazon, and the Nintendo Store almost as soon as pre-orders went live. It’s the first special edition that the Switch 2 has seen since launching last year, following a run of similar limited consoles on the original Switch, including Animal Crossing,Pokémon, and Tears of the Kingdom variants.

Wait times in the Nintendo Store’s queue system regularly stretched past an hour, and once inside, shoppers reported repeated server and checkout errors trying to actually complete an order. The aftermath has been predictably rough for anyone who missed out. eBay listings for console bundles have commonly run between $700 and $900, with some sellers packaging in the Ocarina of Time remake, the matching Pro Controller, and the carry case to push total listings above $1,700 (via Kotaku). Fraudulent listings have also appeared, including at least one offering nothing more than a photo of the console for $400 (via GamingBible).

More stock is coming, but we don’t have a date yet

Nintendo has since acknowledged the shortage directly. A banner notification added to the Nintendo Store this week states plainly that the 40th Anniversary Collection is sold out, adding that the company “will announce when stock is replenished, and it’s unclear whether restocks will arrive before the console’s October 29 release date or afterward

Fan reaction has leaned frustrated, with much of the anger directed at resellers rather than Nintendo itself. One commenter summed up the mood bluntly: “It’s disgusting that people have ordered just to resell.” Others have pointed out that reporting scalper listings to eBay has largely gone nowhere, since the platform has repeatedly ruled that reselling pre-order items doesn’t violate its terms of service. For now, fans are advised to keep an eye out for the restock.
