Valve has officially confirmed the launch of its new wireless VR headset, the Steam Frame. The first units are shipping later this week, but getting your hands on one will require a serious amount of cash.

    Steam Frame Pricing and Models

The Steam Frame comes in two versions. The base 256GB kit starts at a steep $1,609 AUD, while the premium 1TB model will set you back $1,969 AUD. In 2026 are we seriously still shipping hardware with only 256GB of storage?

Both versions feature a powerful Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, incredibly clear 2160 x 2160 displays for each eye, and the ability to play games directly on the headset or stream them from your PC. To sweeten the deal, both models come with the critically acclaimed game Half-Life: Alyx. But if you’ve been interesting in VR for a while then there’s a good chance you already own this title, its still the peak VR game, so is this bonus is really for newcomers.

The Missing Piece: No Power Supply

The Steam Frame is packed with high-end tech, but there is one massive catch. Despite starting at over $1,600, the headset does not include a power supply in the box.

Yes, you read that correctly. Valve is selling a premium device but charging an extra $49 AUD if you want the official charger. You can use any 45w charger you already own, but omitting it from a product this expensive feels like a bad joke.

If you have the budget and want to secure a unit, you cannot just buy one outright today. You need to sign up for the ballot before Friday. The draw will happen on Friday just before the first orders are sent out to buyers.

You can register your interest directly on the Steam hardware store.
