VR gaming is a tricky proposition. On one hand, VR headsets provide an immersive experience you can’t get with the best gaming monitors. On the other hand, unless you buy a standalone VR headset like the Meta Quest 3, you might get tangled in wires while playing a game. But how much power can manufacturers fit in a device meant to slip over your eyes without weighing down your neck after several hours of use? More than you think.

The Meta Quest 3 headset is outfitted with a Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 processor, which rivals a “Rift min-spec machine,” As the minimum requirements to use the Oculus Rift include an Nvidia GTX 960 at 4GB, one would assume the Meta Quest 3’s processor matches that GPU, but the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 is so unlike the Nvidia GPUs that direct comparisons are difficult

Ask five people which Nvidia GPU they think is equivalent to the Meta Quest 3, and you’ll get five different answers. Factors such as memory bandwidth, pure computational processing, and cooling all play a part in overall performance and affect the final result in different ways. Some say a GTX 1650 is a closer comparison, while others think a GTX 1060 is a more apt analogue. Some might argue that the Meta Quest 3 is only as powerful as an Nvidia GTX 750 Ti.

    Teraflops aren’t everything

Normally, when you want to compare the GPUs of two different platforms, it’s a prelude to comparing how games perform on the disparate devices. For instance, people might ask which Nvidia graphics card is equivalent to a Steam Machine because they want to know if “Baldur’s Gate 3” will run better on a Steam Machine or their PC. This logic can provide a more accurate comparison for the Meta Quest 3’s processor. If you scour the Meta Quest game catalog, a good chunk of them are Meta exclusives, but some are available on Steam, giving you a good starting point.

Titles like “VRChat,” and “Bonelab” require a minimum of a GeForce GTX 960 and 1070, respectively, but they also run on the Meta Quest 2, which is half as powerful as the Quest 3. So does that mean the Meta Quest 3 is much stronger than a GTX 960 or 1070? Yes and no. At the end of the day, a game’s performance relies less on a powerful GPU and more on the optimization of its own code. Since one Meta Quest 3 has the same specs as every other Meta Quest 3 (the Meta Quest 3S notwithstanding), it’s somewhat easy to ensure games run smoothly on a Quest 3.

Meanwhile, other headsets plug into PCs, which can run off a potentially infinite combination of CPUs, GPUs, RAM sticks, SSDs, and operating systems, and coding has to account for as many as possible. As such, even though a Meta Quest 3 might not have the same raw processing power as some dedicated Nvidia GTX cards, it can run games more efficiently.
