Steam Frame pricing and release date revealed by Valve – it’s a lottery again

    14 Sep 2026 at 5:14 pm UTC
    | Last updated: 15 Sep 2026 at 10:19 am UTC

    By Liam Squires-Hand

Valve today finally announced the price of their new VR kit the Steam Frame with SteamOS Linux, and it’s actually not as bad as I expected.

Here’s the pricing, which Valve said in a press email is “inclusive of VAT where applicable”:

    • Steam Frame 256GB: 1,059 USD / 1,529 CAD / 1,049 EUR / 889 GBP / 1,609 AUD / 4,539 PLN
    • Steam Frame 1TB: 1,299 USD / 1,859 CAD / 1,279 EUR / 1,089 GBP / 1,969 AUD / 5,549 PLN

I was bracing myself for over £1K for even the most basic version. It’s still a lot of money but all hardware is expensive now, sadly.

The Steam Frame includes a copy of Half-Life: Alyx with all purchases and ships directly from Valve in the U.S., Canada, UK, EU, and Australia. As for Japan, Taiwan, and Hong Kong – Valve said to expect an announcement from KOMODO at around 10:00 AM on the 15th JST. It does not include a power supply, so bring your own charger.

Much like with the Steam Machine – it’s a lottery system. You sign up to potentially get access to purchase it. You can join the list up until Thursday – September 17, 2026 5:00 PM UTC. The list is then closed and randomized, and Valve said you will receive an email with your results within a day. So you’ll know hopefully by the weekend if you can get one or not. Just like with the Steam Machine, you either get the ability to purchase one or get put into the waiting list for when one becomes available sometime later (weeks or months). You should get 72 hours to complete the purchase if you’re on the list, otherwise it then rolls over to someone else.

Valve did not reply to GamingOnLinux for review hardware. They didn’t for the Steam Machine either despite us reviewing the Steam Deck (both models) so much like with the Steam Machine, we’ll be buying one to continue covering Linux gaming. Be sure to check out our Support Us page on how to help.

I’ll reserve any real thoughts of course until I can get my hands on it – but it could really change things for the VR world. A true headset you actually own, and can do anything with – and a full Linux desktop on it too. Very cool. I look forward to removing my Index Base Stations, and not being attached by a wire is going to be so much nicer.

Leave a comment and let us know if you’re going to attempt to grab one. And what your thoughts are on the pricing.
