It’s surely only a matter of time until Team Asobi unveils a successor to 2024’s Astro Bot.
The ‘game of the year’ winner remains one of the PlayStation 5’s very best offerings, and there’s plenty of scope for further adventures with this modern PlayStation mascot.
It’s in real life, however, that you’ll find your next Astro Bot fix as a free LEGO set has leaked online ahead of its planned release next month.
During Sony’s recent State of Play, a LEGO PlayStation 1 was unveiled – and it’s stunning.
The 1,911 piece set faithfully recreates that iconic original console while also offering those who purchase it plenty of hidden discoveries waiting to be unearthed.
Pressing the functioning ‘open’ and ‘power’ buttons, for example, reveals buildable dioramas of classic PlayStation titles like Gran Turismo and Ape Escape.
You’ll even be able to build a classic controller which plugs into the LEGO PlayStation.
The set launches on October 4 – or you can nab it from October 1 if you’re a LEGO Insider – and will set you back £139.99 / $179.99.
As previously leaked by Brick Tap, it appears that purchases of the LEGO PlayStation set will come accompanied with a free LEGO Astro Bot while stocks last.
LEGO should launch this as a standalone set, it’s that good
Now, the free LEGO Astro Bot has leaked in full, also shared by Brick Tap, and the fact that this isn’t being offered as a standalone release is borderline criminal.
The set shows Astro Bot standing proudly, mounted on a stand that boasts the game’s logo.
As he’s mounted from his core, this Astro Bot build actually features articulated limbs so you can position his arms and legs how you please.
It looks as if the set also features multiple sets of eyes, so you can get your LEGO Astro Bot to emote in a variety of ways.
The set measures 20cm high and 12cm wide – and if this was to be offered as a paid standalone release, it would surely fly off the shelves.
The set is yet to be officially unveiled but we’re loath to tell you to take this one with a pinch of salt given just how widely leaked the set is.
Fair to say, PlayStation gamers are liking what they see.
“Just spent all my money on LEGO Pokémon sets and now this,” wrote Twitter/X user NiffoLeon.
“Really wish this was just a normal set,” added thedarkkxight.
AmmarAhsan02 added, “Man I want this but I don’t want to have to pay for the PlayStation set just to get this.”
Remember, the Astro Bot pre-order bonus is only available while stocks last, it seems. Official confirmation should land from LEGO in the coming days.
As for the game franchise, well, Astro Bottook around three years to make, which is relatively short for a video game these days.
It launched back in 2024 so the very earliest we could be looking at for a sequel is 2027.
Of course, developers did support Astro Bot with extra post-launch levels so that might’ve delayed a sequel further.
It’ll be interesting to see whether Team Asobi is tempted to implement co-op in a sequel or whether the series will remain single-player.
PlayStation has plenty of iconic franchises that we’d love to see represented in full-scale VIP levels, like those of Horizon, God of War, and more.
