Rohit Chandel gets bail
Special Judge Shashikala S Nagur granted Chandel bail on Thursday after his lawyer, advocate Saveen Bedi Sachar, submitted that the investigation had been completed and the chargesheet had already been filed. The detailed order from the court is yet to be made available.
According to the proceedings, the minor had accused Chandel of stalking, harassment and assault. The actor’s bail has been granted with several conditions aimed at protecting the complainant and ensuring that the legal process is not affected.
The court directed Chandel to furnish a personal recognisance bond of Rs 50,000 along with a surety of the same amount. He has also been barred from contacting the victim or her family in any manner, including through phone calls or social media platforms.
Chandel has further been directed not to threaten, influence or attempt to induce the victim or any prosecution witness. The court ordered him not to enter the jurisdiction of the area where the victim resides and to stay away from her residence. He has also been instructed not to contact her at any location.
Conditions implied over the bail
As part of the bail conditions, the actor must remain present before the court on every date of the trial. He has also been warned against committing an offence of a similar nature or any other offence. Failure to comply with the conditions could lead to cancellation of his bail.
Chandel’s lawyer had sought permission for the actor to be released on provisional cash bail instead of furnishing a surety. However, the court rejected the request, stressing the seriousness of the alleged offence.
The court observed that the “nature of offense is very serious” and therefore Chandel would have to furnish a surety. The request for provisional cash bail was consequently rejected.
The case will now proceed through the trial process, with Chandel required to appear before the court on scheduled dates. The allegations against him remain subject to adjudication, and the grant of bail does not amount to a finding on the merits of the case.
