The series is currently in its third round of development. The project was initially proposed as a live-action show for HBO Max. It later made its way to Netflix for development as an animated series before being adapted into live-action.
In addition to Epps, executive producers on My Father’s Son include Niles Kirchner, Bob Teitel of State Street, and Maurice Williams, who will also serve as the writer-showrunner.

Earlier this year, Mike Epps bid farewell to The Upshaws, a popular sitcom on Netflix. The fifth and final season of the series premiered on January 15, 2026. The sitcom centered on the titular African-American working-class family from Indiana and their pursuit of the American dream.
Epps played the lead role of Bernard “Bennie” Upshaw Sr., the patriarch of the Upshaw family. The series also starred Wanda Sykes, Kim Fields, Diamond Lyons, Khali Spraggins, Journey Christine, and Jermelle Simon.
Additionally, Epps has released several comedy specials on Netflix. They include Don’t Take It Personal, Only One Mike, Indiana Mike, and Ready to Sell Out.
