DETROIT — Cosm, a new entertainment venue boasting deluxe seating, a high-tech atmosphere and a “shared reality” screen experience, debuted in downtown Detroit Wednesday night to hype up Motor City sports fans.

An invite-only V.I.P. party kicked things off Wednesday with open bars, strolling servers and stations serving steaks, charcuterie, seafood and sushi. The crowd included members of the downtown business, hospitality, sports, and entertainment communities, plus media and a few politicians, including Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield and former mayor Mike Duggan.

“To have this immersive experience in the heart of downtown Detroit gives our sports fans more options,” said Sheffield, addressing the well-dressed crowd from a small stage at the foot of the Dome. “Not only does it support sports fans around the city and beyond, it drives more economic growth to our city, bringing more jobs and bringing more people to greater downtown Detroit to experience all the growth and momentum that is happening in our city.”

The 70,000-square-foot venue’s main attraction is the 87-foot-diameter LED Dome for immersive viewing of sports games and films. Guests sit stadium-style and can order at their seat from the smartphone app or place an order with a server.

There’s also a wall-to-wall LED display in the Hall, a 300-capacity space that flows into the Dome area and acts as a high-end, high-tech sports bar. Every seat at Cosm offers a view of a screen, even on the open-air deck overlooking downtown Detroit.

It’s made for fans who want to cheer on their team and feel like they are actually on the sidelines or courtside, while also being part of a hyped-up crowd. Anchoring Bedrock’s Development at Cadillac Square, this Cosm is one of a few across the country, in Los Angeles, Dallas, Atlanta and soon Cleveland.

“Firstly, the fandom here is unmatched; you guys know how to cheer for your sports,” said Cosm President and CEO Jeb Terry Jr. as he addressed the crowd before a ceremonial ribbon-cutting that included Sheffield and representatives from Bedrock Detroit and Cosm. “And secondly, it’s a city that has immense pride. Detroiters aren’t fake; they’re authentic.”

“There are a few things that we look at when we decide to go into a city: the city, the partnerships and the people. Those are the things that matter most,” he said. “But when you get your boots on the ground of the city, how does it feel? What’s the energy on the street? What’s the energy of the crowd? That feeling is what matters most. That’s what made me say ‘yes.’ When you think about this city, it’s a city of builders, innovators, entrepreneurs, risk takers … it knows what it takes to work.”

Wednesday night’s event concluded with a broadcast of the Seattle Seahawks game against the New England Patriots, but before that the crowd was treated to clips of top moments in Detroit sports history.

Doug Boyer of White Lake Township was at Cosm Wednesday night with Marlana Boyer. He has been to the Cosm in Los Angeles to watch a hockey game and says the experience is “incredible.”

“I mean, it pulls you right in,” he said.

“It’s very good for Detroit; if you can’t go to the game, you can come here,” said Dr. Ronald Reeves of Detroit at Wednesday night’s party.

“It’s nice. These chairs are nice. It’s state-of-the-art. It’s really cool,” added Bailee Reeves, saying she could see Cosm as an option for getting a group of friends together to watch the game rather than at a sports bar or someone’s house.

How much are tickets to Cosm Detroit?

Ticket prices depend on how deep in the Dome you sit.

For example, for one of the many “shared reality” showings of the 2001 film “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” this month, tickets for the back row are $24.20 and go up as you get closer to the dome-shaped screen.

Sporting events are much more expensive for the 500-capacity Dome, but there are other options in the Hall.

For the Detroit Lions game versus the New Orleans Saints Sunday afternoon, remaining tickets in the dome are $330 each. You can watch the game on a large wrap-around LED screen from a reserved seat in the 300-capacity Hall for $33. General admission for that game is sold out, but other games like the Giants v. Rams battle on Sept. 21 is $11 for general admission in the Hall area.

In the Dome, lounge-like booths with little tables have in-seat service and include luxury armchairs, couches for two, three or four people, and tables and chairs closest to the screen. The Hall’s seating is varied, but every seat in the whole complex is lush and padded with material that is comfortable and contemporary.

What is there to eat and drink at Cosm?

Anything you could order at a high-end lounge or a neighborhood sports bar is at Cosm.

That includes appetizers that you would expect to eat while watching a game, like wings, pizza and nachos, but also entrees such as burgers, salads and barbacoa tacos, plus desserts. Prices in similar markets, like at the Cosm in Dallas, list shareables at $15-$26 and main dishes around $24.

Special cocktails just for Detroit include the Belle Isle Bloom with Tito’s Vodka, yuzu, lychee syrup and prosecco, plus a Cadillac Square Margarita made with blood orange juice. Both are $18.

The Detroit menu isn’t on the Cosm app yet, but it should be available soon with prices so you can plan your culinary options.

Some events will have special themed menus, like at the upcoming “Harry Potter” films. Guests can add on a dinner when they buy their seat for $40 that includes a shepherd’s pie, pretzel “wand” with cheese dip, a bottle of butterbeer and Harry Potter-themed desserts like a chocolate frog and Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Beans.

Cosm Detroit is at 25 Cadillac Square just outside of Campus Martius. Visit cosm.com or download the Cosm app for tickets.
