Paramount and California Attorney General Rob Bonta are clashing over a $1.88 billion bond in the Warner Bros. merger case. The bond aims to protect Paramount from financial losses, but Bonta argues it’s unnecessary. A hearing is set for September 24 to resolve the dispute.

Paramount is entangled in a high-stakes legal battle with California Attorney General Rob Bonta over a $1.88 billion bond related to the Warner Bros. Discovery merger case. The bond is meant to shield Paramount from financial setbacks stemming from the potential delay of its competitive positioning against streaming giants Netflix and Disney.

Bonta claims that Paramount voluntarily agreed to postpone the deal’s closure, insisting no injunction was mandated. However, Paramount insists that Bonta’s television remarks equate the delay to a legal injunction, necessitating the bond under antitrust regulations.

As both parties express willingness to negotiate, the situation remains tense. The fate of this media merger, already challenged by California and 11 other states, hinges on a September 24 court hearing, where their arguments will be scrutinized by U.S. District Judge Araceli Martinez-Olguin.
