    • The FY26 statutory net loss narrowed to AUD 307.3 million.
    • Operating expenditure fell 7.9% as management reduced costs.
    • Bally’s emerged as the largest Shareholder after the recapitalisation.
    • Liquidity, regulation, refinancing and operational recovery remain material risks.

Star <a href="https://comicvibe.com/nfl-melbourne-entertainment-who-is-performing-at-la-rams/” title=”NFL Melbourne entertainment: Who is performing at LA Rams”>Entertainment Group (ASX: SGR) has closed out FY26 with a narrower loss, a reshaped boardroom and a new controlling shareholder in US casino group Bally’s Corporation — a combination that gives the embattled operator its strongest claim yet to being past the worst of its multi-year crisis, even as the company itself continues to flag material uncertainty about its future.

For the year ended 30 June 2026, Star reported a statutory net loss of AUD 307.3 million (USD 219.9 million), a 28.2% improvement on FY25’s AUD 427.9 million (USD 306.2 million) loss. Normalised Revenue fell 2.2% to AUD 1.101 billion (USD 787.8 million), while the underlying EBITDA loss before significant items narrowed sharply to AUD 16.1 million (USD 11.5 million) from AUD 76.2 million a year earlier. The improvement came largely from cost discipline: operating expenditure was cut 7.9% to AUD 860.4 million, offsetting continued softness in gaming revenue.

The results landed against the backdrop of a dramatic ownership and governance shake-up. Bally’s Corporation, which led a rescue Recapitalisation of Star, now holds roughly 37.8% of the company after acquiring some 2.5 billion shares, while long-time shareholder Bruce Mathieson has lifted his stake to about 23.16%. Bally’s chairman Soo Kim has since been installed as Star’s new chairman, with additional Bally’s-aligned representatives joining the board, and the company has also refreshed its senior executive ranks, including a new group chief financial officer.

    What Has Happened?

Star’s FY26 performance was a genuinely mixed picture across its three integrated resorts. Sydney, the group’s flagship and largest property, remained the weak link: revenue there fell 9.3% to AUD 621.3 million, with table-game revenue down a steep 16.4%, a decline the company attributed largely to regulatory reforms including mandatory carded play and restrictions on cash gaming — measures introduced in response to earlier findings of governance and anti-money-laundering failures at the casino. By contrast, the Gold Coast property delivered a standout result, with segment EBITDA surging 69.7% to AUD 37 million, while Brisbane’s newer Queen’s Wharf precinct saw revenue roughly double, to AUD 59.7 million from AUD 29.6 million, as the integrated resort continues to ramp up following its recent opening phases.

On a group level, gaming revenue slipped 5.3% to AUD 756.2 million, while non-gaming revenue — covering hotels, dining, entertainment and retail — rose 5.4% to AUD 344.8 million, a modest but encouraging sign of Diversification away from pure gaming turnover. Importantly, the company again flagged material uncertainty regarding its ability to continue as a going concern, a disclosure that has accompanied Star’s results for more than a year and reflects the scale of the balance-sheet repair still required. No Dividend was declared, consistent with the company’s position since regulatory and financial troubles began in 2022.

    The Board and Ownership Reshape

The Bally’s-led recapitalisation has fundamentally changed Star’s ownership structure and, by extension, its governance. With Bally’s and Mathieson together controlling well over half the register, the new board under Soo Kim’s chairmanship has moved quickly to install its own oversight and management team, including changes at chief executive and chief financial officer level. Star’s previous Leadership had been under sustained pressure following findings from New South Wales and Queensland regulatory inquiries that identified serious failures in the casino’s anti-money-laundering controls and corporate culture, findings that led to suspended and heavily conditioned casino licences, regulatory fines, and years of remediation work under external oversight (a process known as the special manager arrangement in New South Wales).

The combination of a narrowing loss, a capital injection from a credible international operator, and a governance reset is the clearest signal yet that Star’s turnaround thesis has some substance behind it, rather than resting purely on hope. Bally’s involvement brings both fresh capital and casino-operating expertise, and its representatives now have direct influence over strategy, cost control and, eventually, remediation of the regulatory conditions still attached to Star’s licences. Investors are watching closely for signs that Sydney’s revenue base can stabilise once the initial shock of the carded-play and cash restrictions passes, and whether Brisbane’s ramp-up can continue to offset weakness elsewhere.

The going-concern disclosure remains the single most important risk factor: it signals that Star’s ability to fund itself without further capital support or refinancing is not yet assured, notwithstanding the Bally’s-led recapitalisation. Regulatory Risk also remains elevated — Star continues to operate under heightened supervision in both New South Wales and Queensland, and any further adverse findings, licence conditions, or delays in having those conditions eased would constrain the pace of recovery. Sydney’s structurally lower table-game volumes, a direct consequence of harm-minimisation reforms, may represent a permanent step-down in revenue rather than a temporary dip. Integration risk between Bally’s international operating style and Star’s Australian regulatory environment is another Factor to watch, as is the broader competitive landscape, with Crown Resorts and other entertainment Options continuing to vie for the same discretionary spending.

What Could Drive the Stock Next?

Key catalysts over the coming year include further detail on Bally’s strategic plans for the group, any easing of regulatory oversight conditions, continued momentum at Gold Coast and Brisbane, and evidence that Sydney’s revenue decline is bottoming out. Progress toward resolving the going-concern uncertainty — through further capital measures, asset sales or sustained free Cash Flow generation — will likely be the clearest marker of whether this is genuinely a turning point or merely a less severe chapter in an ongoing recovery story.

Star’s travails have played out against a broader reckoning across Australia’s casino industry, with rival operator Crown Resorts having gone through its own licensing and probity overhaul in recent years before passing into private ownership. Regulators in New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria have collectively pushed the sector toward stricter harm-minimisation and anti-money-laundering standards, permanently reshaping the Economics of high-roller and cash-intensive gaming that once underpinned much of the industry’s profitability. Star’s experience — a painful compliance overhaul followed by external capital and a governance reset — may prove instructive for how distressed but licence-critical gaming Assets are rehabilitated more broadly, and Bally’s own track record integrating regulated gaming businesses in other jurisdictions will be a useful reference point as the Australian turnaround unfolds.
