Aamrapali Dubey has a bone to pick with the usual idea of what a female star in regional cinema is expected to do. For the Bhojpuri actor, becoming a star was never just about looking the part or collecting popularity. She says her acting gave her the space to step outside the “ornamental” roles that often limit women in regional films.
Speaking to IANS, Aamrapali said she feels she received significant respect from the Bhojpuri industry because of her performances. She also pointed out how unusual that can be for female actors.
“They did give me extreme and a lot of respect because of my acting skills,” she said.
According to the actor, women in regional cinema are often pushed into a narrow space. “Most of the time, being a female actress in regional cinema constrains you to limited, ornamental kinds of roles,” she said.
For Aamrapali, however, her experience turned out differently. She believes the opportunities she received allowed her to prove that female stars could carry roles with more substance.
From television to Bhojpuri stardom
Aamrapali began her acting career on television in 2009 with the soap opera ‘Saat Phere – Saloni Ka Safar’. She later became known for playing Suman in ‘Rehna Hai Teri Palkon Ki Chhaon Mein’.
Her big move into Bhojpuri cinema came in 2014 with ‘Nirahua Hindustani’. That step eventually turned her into one of the most successful female stars in the industry.
Looking back at the journey, Aamrapali describes herself as “very lucky”.
‘I’ve played a lot of different roles’
The actor said she was offered films with different concepts, giving her plenty to perform as an actress.
“I’ve been offered and I’ve done films which have different concepts and there’s a lot to perform in them. So, as an actress, I’ve been able to play a lot of different roles,” she said.
She pointed to some of the characters that helped broaden her screen image. Aamrapali has played a Pakistani girl as well as a Hyderabadi girl in Bhojpuri films.
“I’ve played the role of a Pakistani girl, I’ve also played the role of a Hyderabadi girl,” she said, adding that audiences gave her “a lot of love” for these performances.
For her, that appreciation came before the star label. “After that, I’ve been given the title of a star. So that’s that,” she said.
Now, Aamrapali enters Bigg Boss 20
Aamrapali is now taking that popularity into a very different arena. She is among the contestants of ‘Bigg Boss 20’, which began on <a href="https://comicvibe.com/enhypen-vr-concert-destiny-to-screen-in-singapore-this-september/” title=”ENHYPEN VR concert 'DESTINY' to screen in Singapore this September”>September 6.
