Krafton founder meets Modi as company steps up investment in India
Chang Byung-gyu, chairman of Krafton Inc.’s Board of Directors, met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss cooperation in gaming and emerging technologies and ways to expand the company’s investment in India.
Chang and Modi discussed growing opportunities for cooperation between the two countries, as well as ways to support the growth of India’s gaming and emerging technology sectors.
They also discussed ways to help games and digital content produced in India reach global markets.
Krafton said the discussions align with the Indian government’s Viksit Bharat, or Vision for a Developed Nation, and its “Made in India, for India, and for the world” strategy.
Krafton has invested about $250 million in India to date and plans to invest an additional $250 million over the next three to four years.
It has also established a $670 million unicorn growth fund with Naver Corp. and Mirae Asset Securities Co. to further expand its investment in India.
Krafton said it plans to focus on supporting Indian gaming intellectual property and startups and strengthening the local gaming ecosystem, while expanding its investment into emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, robotics, and deep tech.
Krafton’s Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI), launched in the Indian market, has remained among the top-ranked apps in local app stores for an extended period and has become one of India’s most popular games.
As part of its efforts to develop local talent, Krafton has also hosted the KIGI Academy, an industry-academia program designed to develop future capabilities in game development and digital content creation.
The company has further strengthened its local presence by acquiring Indian studio Nautilus Mobile, developer of the popular Real Cricket series, and is working to nurture Indian gaming talent and locally developed intellectual property.
“India is a key market with outstanding talent across gaming, technology and innovation,” Chang said. “Krafton’s continued investment reflects our long-term confidence in India and our commitment to contributing to its digital economy.”
He noted that the company would work with Indian creators, developers and entrepreneurs through investment, talent development and new technology initiatives to develop products and technologies with global appeal.
