Following reports of theft during the recent Gamescom event, the organizers have issued an apology for their initial handling of the situation, admitting that their response lacked appropriate empathy and understanding.
In a statement shared on social media, Gamescom organizers acknowledged receiving substantial criticism regarding their communication concerning the stolen equipment impacting multiple indie developers, conceding that such feedback was deserved.
The thefts represent more than just losing physical property; they can potentially devastate the entire experience for affected developers by obliterating essential work. “We recognize the profound impact this theft has had and should have communicated this understanding immediately,” the organizers stated.
Initially, Gamescom’s statement referenced awareness of stolen gear during the event, noting that large gatherings inherently face risks of exploitation. Organizers emphasized existing security procedures and advised exhibitors to arrange for additional stand security and theft insurance as needed. A comprehensive review of the event’s security, particularly for indie exhibitors, is underway, and collaborations with shared indie booths to devise more effective solutions will be hosted.
Among reported incidents, developer Ryan Laley experienced a significant financial and emotional setback after all his laptops were taken.
Support came from industry peers like CD Projekt Red and Alienware, who offered replacement equipment. Gamescom conveyed their thanks for such gestures but reiterated their responsibility to collaborate with stakeholders to enhance security measures.
Other affected parties included Iam8bit, which lost laptops used for game demonstrations despite the presence of official security staff. This situation has caused considerable frustration for teams at Nano Park Studios and Coin Crew Games.
Tessera Studios, creators of The Zibbo Show, reported their equipment was also stolen, compromising not only their Gamescom materials but also sensitive data from their cabinet.
