Crash 2.0: Tim Sweeney says AI data centres hit games

Epic Games chief executive Tim Sweeney has told Edge magazine the video games business is living through the worst crash since the 1980s, in a feature the magazine frames as “Crash 2.0”.

GamesIndustry.biz reports that contributing editor Alex Spencer spoke with nine experts for issue 428. Sweeney pointed to “internal dysfunctions” such as ballooning AAA budgets, and to an outside hardware squeeze he ties to AI infrastructure.

What Tim Sweeney told Edge about Crash 2.0

On the component crunch, Sweeney called it “an unexpected, severe disruption.” He said there is “an unprecedented wave of investment in building AI systems and data centres,” and that those buyers “can outbid the entire entertainment industry for all the components.”

“So we’re getting the short end of the stick, and the prices of RAM and storage are quadrupling, and not necessarily stopping there,” he told Edge, as quoted by GamesIndustry.biz. “We should expect there’s just going to be a continual supply crisis for all gaming-relevant hardware for the next three years. The only solution, I think, is going to be building massive new factories to meet the world’s capacity demands – and that will happen.”

Kotaku carried the same Edge interview and noted Sweeney’s colder tone on AI’s place in the industry, given that data-centre demand is competing for the same parts.

Sweeney also put high-end AAA budgets at between $250 million and $400 million. Former PlayStation boss Shawn Layden, in the same Edge piece, argued studios should get comfortable with a game that makes $50 million counting as a success, and called financial re

Playable Worlds chief Raph Koster told Edge that “AI is not a platform reset, where costs get lower.” Former Tencent executive Amir Satvat said traditional AAA studios in North America and western Europe are “ground zero for destruction,” and that some firms that cut staff because they thought AI tools would cover the gap later had to hire people back.

tbreak has already covered Epic’s March 2026 layoffs tied to a Fortnite engagement slump, when Sweeney told staff the company was spending more than it was making.

Edge issue 428 is out now. Sweeney’s attributed forecast remains a multi-year supply crisis for gaming-relevant hardware until new manufacturing capacity arrives.

    What is Crash 2.0?

Crash 2.0 is the label Edge magazine uses in issue 428 for a roundtable with nine industry experts on whether today’s downturn matches the scale of the early-1980s video game crash. Epic’s Tim Sweeney called it the worst crash since the 1980s. It is Edge’s framing, not a tbreak verdict.

What did Tim Sweeney say about AI and hardware?

Speaking to Edge, as quoted by GamesIndustry.biz, Sweeney said AI systems and data centres can outbid entertainment for components, that RAM and storage prices are quadrupling, and that gaming-relevant hardware faces a continual supply crisis for about three years until large new factories are built.

Did Sweeney only blame AI data centres?

No. GamesIndustry.biz reports he also cited “internal dysfunctions,” including AAA development budgets he put between $250 million and $400 million.

Who else spoke to Edge for Crash 2.0?

Coverage names Shawn Layden, Raph Koster and Amir Satvat among the nine experts interviewed by Alex Spencer for issue 428, alongside Tim Sweeney.

    Is there a UAE angle?

No local UAE hook was identified for this package. The story is global industry commentary from an Edge magazine interview.
