Xbox will introduce monthly cloud gaming limits for Game Pass subscribers beginning in November 2026.
As laid out in a blog post, Game Pass Essential will be limited to five hours, Premium to ten hours, and Ultimate to fifteen hours per month.
After reaching these limits, subscribers may purchase additional cloud playtime through the Xbox Store. Xbox noted that “available hours, purchasing options, and cloud gaming features may vary by market.”
Xbox anticipates that these limits will affect 4% of Game Pass subscribers and will provide additional pricing details at a later date.
The platform holder said it made the decision because “the cost of providing cloud gaming grows as more people use it and play for longer.”
“Moving to monthly limits allows us to keep offering the service while continuing to invest in its reliability and performance. We understand that for some players the practical result is a higher cost.”
Xbox also announced that from November, players can access Xbox cloud gaming without a Game Pass subscription by purchasing cloud playtime hours and streaming eligible owned games on supported devices.
It stated this “will provide another option for people who want occasional access to cloud gaming or do not want a recurring Game Pass subscription.”
Xbox One owners will be able to play eligible Xbox Series X|S games “without requiring an immediate hardware upgrade.”
In July, Xbox began testing ad-supported game streaming, with ads shown before each session while core gameplay remains unchanged.
Xbox said the test is “designed to help give people more affordable ways to play on devices they already own.”
“When done well, advertising can help lower the cost of access. It creates another way for players to get into games without an upfront streaming purchase and expands audiences through new ways to play.”
These initiatives are part of CEO Asha Sharma’s plan to focus on “efficiency and affordability alongside performance.”
“With the crisis that’s currently happening in hardware and components, it is absolutely something all of us need to be thinking about and innovating on and giving people more choice in terms of how they play their console and how they purchase their console.”
