Among fans of movies and anime, there are those who enjoy visiting filming locations and settings, also known as ‘pilgrimages to sacred sites,’ and the number of cases where local governments officially collaborate with these works is increasing. ‘Movie Scene Map’ is a website that displays the filming locations and settings of movies, dramas, games, anime, and manga on a map.

‘Movie Scene Map’ uses data from Wikidata , a collaborative editing database provided by the Wikimedia Foundation, which operates Wikipedia, to collect filming locations and settings for movies. Furthermore, from August 2026 onwards, it will also utilize information from the individual movie Wikipedia pages.
The ‘Movie Scene Map’ separates filming locations for movies and dramas from settings for games, anime, and manga. Filming locations are the actual places where movies and dramas were shot, and are recorded in the ‘ filming location (P915) ‘ section of Wikidata. Settings are the places that served as the setting for games, anime, and manga, and are recorded in the ‘ narrative location (P840) ‘ section of Wikidata.
The image below shows what you actually see when you access ‘Movie Scene Map.’ A large number of colorful dots are displayed on a dark world map. The dots on the map are color-coded as follows: orange for countries and regions, blue for landmarks and buildings, emerald for towns and cities, green for scenic spots and natural areas, purple for castles and palaces, and red for roads and squares.
Please note that ‘Movie Scene Map’ saves data such as your browser’s IP address and date for 14 days. It also offers an option to record clicks and mouse movements to analyze which parts of the map you explored. Click ‘No thanks’ if you wish to decline this option.
When I tried hovering the cursor over the area around England, ‘River Thames’ appeared. Below the place name, there was a list of movies and TV shows that were filmed on the River Thames.

Clicking on the title of a work will allow you to check all of the locations where the work was photographed, if there are multiple locations.
You can see that there are filming locations for ‘Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix’ throughout the UK. The tab on the left side of the screen lists the names of the places where the filming took place.
Japan has also been used as a filming location and setting for various works.
Many points are displayed, especially around Tokyo. When I tried hovering the cursor over Shinjuku Gyoen, it was registered as the setting for Makoto Shinkai’s film ‘
Even famous works whose settings are immediately recognizable may not be registered, but some recent works are included. For example, when you hover your cursor over Izu Oshima, it is listed as the setting for the anime ‘
